Jahannam (Arabic: جهنم) is the Quranic and Islamic term for Hell. The word is similar to the Hebrew term Gehinnom (גֵּיהִנּוֹם), from which derives the Greek word Gehenna (Γέεννα).

This page quotes from the most prominent Quranic passages and verses about Jahannam. The translation used is The Clear Quran by Dr. Mustafa Khattab, and the links go to Quran.com, which provides additional translations. For more information, refer to the Wikipedia article on Jahannam.

    • Quran 37:51–57
    • Translation:
      • One of [the residents of Paradise] will say, "I once had a companion ˹in the world˺ who used to ask ˹me˺, 'Do you actually believe ˹in resurrection˺? When we are dead and reduced to dust and bones, will we really be brought to judgment?'" He will ˹then˺ ask, "Would you care to see ˹his fate˺?" Then he ˹and the others˺ will look and spot him in the midst of the Hellfire. He will ˹then˺ say, "By Allah! You nearly ruined me. Had it not been for the grace of my Lord, I ˹too˺ would have certainly been among those brought ˹to Hell˺."

    • Quran 11:42–46
    • Translations:
      • Noah called out to his son, who stood apart, "O my dear son! Come aboard with us and do not be with the disbelievers." He replied, "I will take refuge on a mountain, which will protect me from the water." Noah cried, "Today no one is protected from Allah's decree except those to whom He shows mercy!" And the waves came between them, and his son was among the drowned. And it was said, "O earth! Swallow up your water. And O sky! Withhold ˹your rain˺." The floodwater receded and the decree was carried out. The Ark rested on Mount Judi, and it was said, "Away with the wrongdoing people!" Noah called out to his Lord, saying, "My Lord! Certainly my son is ˹also˺ of my family, Your promise is surely true, and You are the most just of all judges!" Allah replied, "O Noah! He is certainly not of your family—he was entirely of unrighteous conduct. So do not ask Me about what you have no knowledge of! I warn you so you do not fall into ignorance."
