In 1790, central nervous system involvement was described by Hamilton and, in 1860, sensorineural deafness by Toynebee. By the 1940s, mumps was garnering mounting concern as a cause of painful orchitis, aseptic meningitis, and encephalitis that was substantially affecting troop mobilization.
