The Goldfish Problem [1.01] edit

Steven Grant: There has been a major blunder because they have got seven gods here, and the Ennead has nine.
Donna: I fired two of them for being late. Listen, if you don't stop nattering at me, I swear I will shove you in a sarcophagus. You can tell the pharaoh in there what is wrong with them and all.

Dylan: Punchy. Calling me now?
Steven: What? What do you mean? I'm... I'm at the restaurant for steak. It's steak time.
Dylan: Yeah, I ate steak by myself, thanks. Two days ago.
Steven: What, what? I thought we said Friday. Today.
Dylan: Right. Welcome to Sunday.
Steven: Come on, no. I think Friday still comes after Thursday, doesn't it?
Dylan: It doesn't change the fact that today is Sunday, which means "lose my number."

Arthur Harrow: Consider this... Had Ammit been free, she would have prevented Hitler and the destruction he wrought. Nero, the Armenian genocide, Pol Pot.
Steven: Not nice people.
Arthur: But she was betrayed.
Steven: Was she?
Arthur: By indolent fellow gods. By even her own Avatar.
Steven: "Avatars". Blue people. Love that film.
Arthur: By Avatar, what I mean…
Steven: You mean the anime?
Arthur: Steven. Stop it.

Steven: Mate, I don't have your bloody beetle. I swear. I...
Arthur: Oh, no, the scarab doesn't belong to me. It belongs to her. Do you know Ammit?
Steven: Do I know Ammit? No, not personally. Um, Egyptian deity, right? Uh, world's first boogeyman.
Arthur: She was only the boogeyman for evildoers.
Steven: Right.
Arthur: She grew weary of having to wait for sinners to commit their crime before punishing them. Would you wait to weed a garden 'til after the roses were dead?
Steven: I-I wouldn't do that.
Arthur: The justice of Ammit surveys the whole of our lives.
Steven: Got it.
Arthur: Past, present, future. She knows what we've done and what we will do.
Steven: Great. Okay. Well, the books must have left that part out.

Layla El-Faouly: Oh, my God, you're alive.
Steven: Yeah, all right.
Layla: That's it? I've been texting and calling you for months. You couldn't give me any sign that you were okay? I thought something happened to you. Where are you? Where-where have you been?
Steven: Uh...
Layla: Hello? You...
Steven: Sorry, I-I just found this phone in my flat and I'm trying to figure out whose it is.
Layla: What... what is with this accent?
Steven: What?
Layla: What is happening right now?
Steven: Sorry, who... who do you think I am?
Layla: What do you mean "who"? What's wrong with you, Marc?
Steven: What did you just call me? Who is this? Why did you call me Marc?

Summon the Suit [1.02] edit

Marc Spector: Oy, Steven, what the hell are we wearing?
Steven: I don't know. She said I needed a suit.
Marc: Yeah, the ceremonial armor from Khonshu's temple, not psycho Colonel Sanders.

Marc: Steven, I need you to listen to me very carefully.
Steven: There he is. He comes. Hello, man in the mirror. I was wondering if you'd pop up again.
Marc: I know you're scared.
Steven: A bit, yeah.
Marc: I know you're confused. You weren't supposed to see any of this.
Steven: No? Well, bit late for that, innit? So, what? Am I, like, meant to be some sort of mad secret agent or something?
Marc: It's a little more complicated than that.
Steven: More complicated? What? Am I possessed? Are you, like, a demon? Or...
Marc: You're in danger, and I can save us, just like I did last night. But I can't have you interfering in what I have left to do. So, this is what's gonna happen. You're gonna go lay down on that cot back there. You're gonna take a nice nap.
Steven: Are you joking? Sleep... I'm never gonna go to sleep again. You hear me? Look, I don't care how bloody handsome you are. Tell me what it is you are? What are you?
Marc: You sure you want to know?
Steven: Yes, bloody... yes.
Marc: I serve Khonshu. I'm his avatar. Which means you are, too. Sort of. We protect the vulnerable and deliver Khonshu's justice to those who hurt them.
Steven: Khonshu?
Marc: Yeah.
Steven: The Egyptian god of the moon? Oh, my God, that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. I eat one piece of steak, and then, bam, I go bonkers.

Steven: Sorry. If Ammit judges people pre-evil, like, before the fact, then, isn't she judging an innocent person? I mean, a thought can't be evil, can it? I think about killing my boss all the time, but I wouldn't actually do it. What about a child? Would she kill a child for something they might do in 30 years?
Arthur: I'm glad you mentioned that. Sometimes, the cure is a little taste of the disease. The difference between medicine and poison sometimes is only dosage. Consider a diseased limb. Amputation, horrific and grotesque, is necessary for the larger health.

Arthur: I know being on the right side of things is important to you. Khonshu always truis to ensnare those with a strong moral conscience.
Khonshu: You have no conscience.
Arthur: You don't have to listen to him. He often throws temper tantrums, like a two-year-old. None of the gods respect him. Perhaps that's why he's banished.
Khonshu: I only punish those who have already done harm. I am real justice!
Arthur: What's he saying now? "I am real justice"?
Steven: Can you hear him?
Arthur: Not anymore. I was his former avatar. Before you. I was the fist of vengeance.
Steven: I'm not the fist of anything. That's the little American man living inside of me.
Arthur: And that's, uh, that's Marc?
Steven: Soup's... yeah. it's very good. It's ace. Yeah, it's lovely.
Arthur: Khonshu punishes those who have already walked an evil path. His retribution comes too late. By the time his fist of vengeance arrives, people have already suffered. Ammit knows this too well. She tears evil up from the root, casting her judgment before evil's done. That's why we must resurrect her.
Steven: Right. but... Isn't that a bit dodgy? Like, trusting the judgment of a weird crocodile lady?
Arthur: You don't need to doubt her judgment. Ammit will light the path to good by eradicating the choice of evil, which brings us to the scarab. That scarab functions as a kind of compass, leading us to Ammit's tomb. She's out there, waiting, longing to be freed. While the cruel masses deserve to face her judgment. And in the wake of their screams, evil eradicated. Steven, to exist at that moment? Heaven on Earth.

Billy Kennedy: What's this?
Steven: It's a paperweight.
Billy: Where'd you get it?
Steven: Paperweight shop.

The Friendly Type [1.03] edit

Marc: All right, well, if we can't find Harrow's digging crew, we're gonna have to stop 'em another way. So? What about the other gods? Are they just gonna stand by and allow somebody to unleash Ammit?
Khonshu: To signal for an audience with the gods is to risk their wrath.
Marc: Why? What's the worst that could happen?
Khonshu: Anger them enough and they'll imprison me in stone.
Marc: That doesn't sound so bad to me.
Khonshu: See how you fare against Harrow without the protection of my healing armor.
Marc: All right. So, what? Do you have any good ideas?
Khonshu: I have a bad one…

The Tomb [1.04] edit

Marc: I'm here. You're not alone.
Steven: I know I'm not alone. I know I'm bloody not alone. I've got Layla. She's got my back.
Marc: Are you in love? Are you in love with my wife?
Steven: I appreciate your concern, mate. I really do. But we've got it from here.
Marc: I swear you, Steven. I swear…
Steven: If I need a recipe for a protein shake or something, I'll call you.
Marc: I'll throw us off a cliff!

Asylum [1.05] edit

Marc: Right. So this... this is the afterlife? The afterlife?
Taweret: An afterlife, not the afterlife. You'd be surprised how many intersectional planes of untethered consciousness exist.
Marc: Yeah.
Taweret: [gasps] Like the Ancestral Plane! Oh, just gorgeous! Anyway, I do actually have cards for all this if you just wait, and, um... [ruffles through papyrus papers] I'm sorry. Please, err, wait... Okay, so, because the Duat's true nature is impossible for the human mind to comprehend...
Steven: Right?
Taweret: ...you may perceive this realm as something more easily recognizable to you.
Marc: [nodding] Uh-huh.
Taweret: A psych ward's a first for me, but, hey, we can roll with it, right?

Steven: When danger is near, Steven Grant has no fear.

Gods and Monsters [1.06] edit

Arthur: Sometimes we need the cold light of death before we can see reality.

Ammit: There is so little difference in what we want for this world. Why do this dance for the rest of time?
Khonshu: You know the answer. I only punish those who have chosen evil!
Ammit: So do I - only I don't give them the satisfaction of committing it!

Ammit: Why fight, knowing you will fail?
Khonshu: Because it is my choice! The very thing you take away!
