    Breathing aromas of old unremember’d
Perfumes and shining in dust-cover’d places
With sudden hints of forgotten splendour—
So on the lips of the peasant his language,
His only now, the tongue of the peasant.
    • "March Thoughts from England", st. 7, in Wild Justice (1896), p. 26; originally published as "Spring Thoughts from England" in The English Illustrated Magazine, vol. xv (April–September 1896), p. 153
