John Cotton Dana (August 19, 1856July 21, 1929) was an American librarian and museum director.


  • A great department store, easily reached, open at all hours, is more like a good museum of art than any of the museums we have yet established.
  • Who dares to teach must never cease to learn.
    • In 1912 Dana was asked to supply a Latin quotation suitable for inscription on a new building at Newark State College (now Kean College). Unable to find an appropriate quotation, Dana composed what became the college motto. The New York Times Book Review, March 5, 1967, p. 55.
