Accession: 2014.020.007 Award, Medal, Navy Cross The Navy Cross was awarded to Robert G. Bradley posthumously for; "his outstanding fortitude, great personal valor, and self-sacrificing devotion to the completion of an extremely perilous task, " as well as his "extraordinary herorism." Bradley was serving onboard USS PRINCETON when the ship was attacked by a Japanese plane, the resulting damage set fire to the ship's hangar deck and resulted in the explosion of bombs stored in the torpedo magazine. This killed Bradley and other men in the vicinity. Bradley was leading a repair party to fight the fire at the time. The medal was recently displayed on USS ROBERT G. BRADLEY (FFG-49).
