Claymore (manga)

Japanese manga series

Claymore is a dark fantasy manga and anime series created by Norihiro Yagi. The manga is currently serialised in Jump Square by Shueisha. The series is set in a medieval like world where humans coexist with creatures called Yoma sentient monsters that feed on human innards, a nameless and highly secretive organization has created an order of half-human, half-yoma warriors to protect humans from the yoma, for a large fee. The people of this world have dubbed these warriors as "Claymores" based on their gargantuan, unsheathed swords, or the "Silver Eyed Witches", based on their appearances and seemingly cold nature toward others. The story centers on Clare, one of the "Claymores".

  • My existence was nothing more to her than a stone by the side of the road. I wasn't enough to fill her belly. Or perhaps I didn't even get reflected in her eyes. I couldn't even hate the beast that killed Teresa. It was me, overcome by fear, that I could not forgive.
    • Scene 24: Marked for Death, Part 7
  • You said I should have forgotten everything and lived as a human, but... there's no way I could do that. At that time, Teresa was everything to me. Everything I lost... my life, my voice, even my joy in living... Teresa gave those back to me. Teresa gave me everything. So I had no choice but to move forward. I wasn't strong enough to forget all that and continue living.
    • Scene 37: Fit for Battle, Part 1
  • Don't be so quick to throw away your life. No matter how disgraceful or embarrassing it may be, you need to keep struggling to find your way out until the very end.
    • Extra Scene 4: Untarnished Resolve
  • I... I'm so happy I got to travel with you, Clare. My family got killed. The town shunned me. They even cast me out. Everything I loved, everything I knew, I lost it all at once. That's why I'm happy. I'm happy I got to travel with you. To have someone to be with. You always said you weren't kind. But you were kinder to me than anyone. That's why I don't want anybody else. I just want to be with you. That's why... if you die, I'm going with you.
    • Scene 11: Darkness in Paradise, Part 7
  • Well, you all threw me out of town so it's not like I was expecting a warm welcome. But treating me like a Yoma? Now that's mean. Seven years ago I lost my family to Yoma, but... it seems to me that all of you have lost something deep down too.
    • Scene 81: Genesis of War, Part 4
  • Even if it's a rule... whether or not I follow it is up to me. Whether I obey the rule or break it and get killed by my comrades... is my choice.
    • Scene 15: Teresa of the Faint Smile, Part 4
  • This little girl, who's not even half my size... taught me that tears can flow even from these silver eyes.
    • Scene 15: Teresa of the Faint Smile, Part 4
  • Say your prayers, wretches. Filth like you is even lower than Yoma. I'm going to kill... every last one of you.
    • Scene 16: Teresa of the Faint Smile, Part 5
  • You can come after me as many times as you want. I'll cut you down every time.
    • Scene 22: Marked for Death, Part 5
  • [Last words] All right then, I'll put you out of your misery. [Her hands are sliced off] Eh?
    • Scene 23: Marked for Death, Part 6
  • Remember, you have comrades. Us, who will support you with the things you can't do all by yourself. That's what a team is about, Commander Undine.
    • Scene 55: The Battle of the North, Part 6
  • Look at us, Miria. These are the lives you saved. Nobody is cursing you... As long as we understand the feelings of those who died, it will be alright. We were really fortunate to have you as our leader... that is what I believe from the bottom of my heart.
    • Scene 66: The Souls of the Fallen, Part 2
  • Don't you think it's beautiful? That rosy red that spreads only where the body is wounded. Shall I paint you in that lovely red... little boy?
    • Scene 31: The Endless Gravestones, Part 1
  • Really! How marvellous! You two are simply marvellous. Which one of you should I kill? Which one of you would be more fun to watch as you wail in agony?
    • Scene 31: The Endless Gravestones, Part 1
  • This is called the "Rippling Sword". "Rippling Ophelia"... Great name, don't you think? But it's not too well known yet. Because most of the people who've seen it are dead.
    • Scene 35: The Endless Gravestones, Part 5
  • The idea that you can’t die yet because you still have something to protect... that is the foolish illusion of the weak.
    • Scene 36: The Endless Gravestones, Part 6
  • [Last words] Well done. You win. As promised, I entrust you with everything. After all I can't do any more at this point anyways. Man, this really annoys me. I really hate people, who put their life on the line like you. Now quickly, finish me off. If you don't hurry, I'll regenerate again. Since you will be fighting in my stead, I won't stand for it if you lose, understand?
    • Scene 40: Fit for Battle, Part 4
  • Seeing the same thing at that time and place, either moving forward or running away... I suppose that's what separates those who are fit for battle from those who are not.
    • Scene 37: Fit for Battle, Part 1
  • Teresa had plenty of chances to kill Priscilla. The reason she didn't was that after being with you, Teresa's heart lost the toughness of a warrior. The Teresa I knew would have dispatched Priscilla without hesitation at their first encounter. After she met you, she was no longer fit for battle. That's why she died. That's the truth. But I think Teresa was happy.
    • Scene 38: Fit for Battle, Part 2
  • Live, Clare! Your staying alive is the only proof that Teresa ever existed.
    • Scene 38: Fit for Battle, Part 2
  • Being thrown away by humans, devoted to them even though you aren't one of them... and once they are finished with you, they have you end your life yourself... and not even an ounce of gratitude for all that. On the contrary: for your whole life you are hated and reviled. It really is idiotic. We are a different species after all. Once you start seeing things that way, it all becomes very easy to accept. Do humans shed tears for the birds, pigs, cows and sheep that become their food? Of course they don't. They are a different species after all. That is nature. That is the truth. That is Providence. Your way of thinking up to now was the warped one.
    • Scene 43: The Witch's Maw, Part 3
  • My goal isn't your death. I will just torture you, make you awaken and then make you my friends!
    • Scene 47: The Deep Abyss of Purgatory, Part 2
  • Sorry... I really... want to let you savor your moment of glory a little longer. But I really can't be having this. After all is said and done... he is still my man after all.
    • Scene 49: The Deep Abyss of Purgatory, Part 4

  • Looks like most of what you say immediately vanishes from your head once you say it. I really envy you for a brain with such a lively metabolism.
    • Scene 44: The Witch's Maw, Part 4
  • Don't cry. It will make your face even uglier.
    • Scene 44: The Witch's Maw, Part 4
  • This might come a little late but... you people make me sick.
    • Scene 62: Kindred of Paradise, Part 1

Others

  • Oh... Hello, Irene. What's wrong you seem to be missing an arm. Ah... [Lifts up the arm in her left hand] Here it is. You can have it back. [Tosses the arm in front of Irene] You shouldn't leave things lying around.
  • The impression of the small child I hugged when I first met Miata is long gone. Instead, there is something that can easily rip apart the monsters I am no match for, a presence beyond those monsters... To be honest... Miata scares me the most...
    • Clarice
    • Scene 73: A Child Weapon, Part 1
  • There's no meaning in me trying to destroy them. I'd much rather they destroy themselves.
    • Rubel
    • Scene 84: The Lamentation of the Earth, Part 2
  • Strange... to begin with, all I ever intended... was to use Priscilla to bring everything under my control, and yet... somewhere during that time, watching Raki mature with Priscilla by his side... I actually found myself becoming contented with nothing more than the bare minimum of meals... I don't want to die... Even if that makeshift family... was all nothing more than an illusion, doomed to fall apart someday... I really wish... really wish it could have lasted even the tiniest bit longer...

    • Scene 89: The Lamentation of the Earth, Part 7
  • While we are half-human, half-youma, most of our heart belongs to the human side. Hence, when we see our comrades who trained and fought with us as warriors get hurt, we get angry as if it affected us personally. When we see one of them die, we grieve as if it had been a friend. The lone warrior that marched in here all by herself gave us strength and weakness, despair and hope, all at once. That's exactly why anyone who was there was strongly driven by the single thought that they mustn't kill that person. With all due respect, the cause of the organizations defeat is that they knew too little about our hearts as humans.

Dialogue

edit

Scene 17: Teresa of the Faint Smile, Part 6

edit
Orsay: What is the meaning of this... Teresa?
Teresa: It's hardly profound. The reason's very simple. I've found a reason to live. From now on I'm going to live for the girl.
Orsay: You're going to regret this.
Teresa: I won't. I don't have any reason to.

Scene 20: Marked for Death, Part 3

edit
Priscilla: Why didn't you surrender yourself before? You broke the Organization's rules. Our job is to kill Yoma, to protect human life. We risk our lives fighting for humans. For us to kill one of them... would be to destroy the very trust that we've tried so hard to create. Forgive me... By the Organization's rules, I must take your head!
Teresa: You've done a fine job of justifying their logic. It may make sense, but if you don't mind my saying... the real world doesn't work that way... young lady.

Scene 28: The Slashers, Part 4

edit
Helen: It's hopeless. This is the end. There's nothing I can do. It's like he said. This is true despair.
Clare: Despair? After only this? I've known a greater opponent... and felt true despair.

Scene 44: The Witch's Maw, Part 4

edit
Galatea: Oh, I underestimated you. I see you can use that head of yours once in a while.
Dauf: Think you can run? Since you made a fool out of me, I won't let you off that easy. I'll kill you. I'll strip you naked, tear off your arms and legs, pull out your guts and then make fun of you.

Scene 60: The Assault on Pieta, Part 4

edit
Jean: If I think about it... maybe I actually died then... and only continued to live for this one moment.
Clare: NO, YOU ARE WRONG! YOUR LIFE IS YOURS! IT BELONGS TO NOBODY!!
Jean: [Last words] Let me express my gratitude again... Thank you, Clare. I am glad to have met you.

Scene 64: Kindred of Paradise, Part 3

edit
Rafaela: Sister... I'm so sorry, sister. At that time... If I had only been stronger. [Releases her Yoma energy]
Luciela: [Last words] Wha... What... What are you doing, Rafaela... WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! [Rafaela ignores her and continues to crush her] PLEASE, STOP IT!! RAFAELA- WHY? I WANTED TO SEE YOU SO BADLY ALL THIS TIME! ALL THIS TIME!! SO WHY??! [Rafaela doesn't respond] I'LL GIVE YOU HALF OF ALL THOSE LANDS... NO, IF YOU WANT THAT, EVEN MORE! MUCH, MUCH MORE!! SO PLEASE, PLEASE!! [Her spine snaps]
Rafaela: I love you... big sister...

Scene 76: A Child Weapon, Part 4

edit
Galatea: I just wanted to protect this city and all those who live in it. It's as simple as that.
Agatha: Are you serious? That reason's almost pathetic enough to make me laugh.
Galatea: Really, you too? I thought the same way... But strangely enough, it's not all that bad. You should give it a try yourself sometime.

Scene 78: Genesis of War, Part 1

edit
Miria: You think... taking hostages will work against us?
Agatha: It would not if I was up against regular warriors. But judging from those outfits, that's not what you seem to be. You also mentioned before you wouldn't allow any more casualties. I was thinking that doing this might have an effect on you that correlates to the amount of bullshit you spout.

Scene 95: Claws and Fangs of Memory, Part 6

edit
Dauf: R... Riful... D... Don't worry about me... J... Just get away yourself... At this rate we'll both be killed.
Riful: Oh, be quiet. If you say any more unnecessary things, I'll break up with you.
Dauf: I... I don't mind... Just as long as you're alive...
Riful: Once you're properly healed up... I'm going to beat you up so badly we'll be right where we started...

Extra Scene 1: A Warrior's Pride

edit
Rosemary: Shit. Those idiots at the Organization... Why... Why not me? Why did they give the Number 1 to someone like her? Shit. Why?!
Teresa: That's because I... was just that much stronger.
Rosemary: Ah?
Teresa: Big words for being such a sad mess. You certainly talk trash like a Number 1. And because you don't understand... you are Number 2.

Extra Scene 2: The Phantom and the Wicked Warrior

edit
Miria: Why... Why didn't you call out my name? Why didn't you let me know it was you?! Why? Why?!
Ophelia: It no longer had a human mind. No need to think about that too deeply. After all... it was just a monster.
