Charlotte Whitton

Canadian politician

Charlotte Whitton (March 8, 1896January 25, 1975) was a noted Canadian feminist and mayor of Ottawa. She became the first female mayor of a major city in Canada in 1951.


  • Whatever women do they must do twice as well as men to be thought of half as good. Luckily, this is not difficult.

  • A student directing Chatlotte Whitton to a parking place at Champlain High School called her Mrs. Whitton. Charoltte Whitton replied to the student, "Mrs. Whitton? My dear girl, no man has had that privilege."
