piece in the board game chess
The bishop (♗, ♝) is a piece in the game of chess. It moves and captures along diagonals without jumping over intervening pieces. Each player begins the game with two bishops. The starting squares are c1 and f1 for White's bishops, and c8 and f8 for Black's bishops.
Quotes
edit- The Bishop he is witty brain
That chooseth Crossest paths to pace,
And evermore he pries with pain
To see who seeks him most disgrace.
Such stragglers when he finds astray,
He takes them up, and throws away.- Nicholas Breton, "The Chess Play" (1593), The Bishop
