Dialogue
edit- Bernard Teppler: Mr. Skiles! Bernard Teppler. American University. Absolute pleasure to have you here. [Referring to Mason's luggage] Let me take... Welcome to Beirut. We're thrilled to have you here. Let me take that for you. [Driving] I'll be your liaison with the university. Get you where you need to get. Beirut's changed quite a bit in the past ten years. You missed quite the civil war.
- Mason Skiles: My itinerary says I'm staying at the L'Admiral Hotel.
- Bernard Teppler: Yes, indeed. We've booked you the deluxe suite. On the shelling side, I'm afraid. Beachside was full.
- Mason Skiles: Why aren't we taking Rue du Nabil?
- Bernard Teppler: It's faster. Rue du Nabil's not good today. Big car bomb last night. Many people killed.
- Mason Skiles: Who lit that fuse?
- Bernard Teppler: Well, it's Beirut, Mr. Skiles. Depends who you ask. PLO says it's Amal militia. Amal militia says it's Christian militia. Christian militia says it's the Druze. Druze says it's the Syrian Army. Listen to the radio from Damascus, it's the Israelis making excuses to come across the border.
- Driver: Ask Israel...
- Bernard Teppler: Ah, for them it's always the PLO.
- Driver: Not the PLO. My wife says it was Gamaeet El Cheea.
- Mason Skiles: What do you say?
- Driver: I say we skip Rue du Nabil. [Pulls up to checkpoint] They're checking papers, sir.
- Mason Skiles: Oh, fuck it.
- Teenaged irregular soldier: I'm afraid I'll need your passport.
- Bernard Teppler: Nothing to worry about. PLO run a decent checkpoint.
- Mason Skiles: You're not hallucinating. It's me Mason. [To Sandy] I don't want to be anywhere near this murdering fuck! ['"To Abu Rajal in Arabic] Today is you're lucky night... YOU SON OF A WHORE!
- PLO Officer: I thought you came in good faith.
- Mason Skiles: I did. And now I want to leave in one piece.
- Sandy Crowder: If I were you, I'd kiss this place goodbye once and for all.
- Mason Skiles: What if you were you?
- Sandy Crowder: I've got a pretty good bargaining position. They already offered up some pleasant options.
- Mason Skiles: You got somebody making that deal for you?
- Sandy Crowder: I've got a short list.
- Mason Skiles: I'm around 'til dinner if you really want to stick it to 'em.
- Mason Skiles: You need to have other plans.
- Nadim: [Holds up his gun] This is my only plan.
