    • Mightier to me the house my father made,
Than your audacious heads, O Halls of Rome!
      More than immortal marbles undecayed,
The thin sad slates that cover up my home; More than your Tiber is my Loire to me,
Than Palatine my little Lyré there,
And more than all the winds of all the sea
The quiet kindness of the Angevin air.

    • Albert G. Latham, The Oxford Treasury of French Literature (1915), p. 187: "The soft climate of Anjou."
  • By heaven, these scroyles of Angiers flout you, kings,
And stand securely on their battlements,
As in a theatre, whence they gape and point
At your industrious scenes and acts of death.
