Emperor of Japan from 1989 to 2019

Akihito (born 23 December 1933) was the reigning Emperor of Japan (1989-2019), the 125th emperor of his line according to Japan's traditional order of succession. He acceded to the throne in 1989. In Japan, the emperor is never referred to by his given name, but rather is referred to as "His Imperial Majesty the Emperor" which may be shortened to "His Imperial Majesty".

Having already lived eighty years, I am somewhat perplexed by the question about my life in the coming years, but I would say that, while accepting the limits arising from age, I hope to continue to fulfill my role as best I can.
