!Voting in dates

edit

Hi RyanCross. I noticed you were enquiring about Quote of the Day (QOTD) voting. QOTD is administered by Kalki (talk · contributions), and everyone is welcome to participate. There is a brief overview at WQ:QOTD, and there is an explanation of the ranking system at the top (and bottom) of each month's page. The Recent Changes page header has a link to the current month's voting at Votes:Quote of the day. Vote for as many as you want, but please use 4s and 0s sparingly. Feel free to make suggestions too: they should have some relevance to the date, usually the author's birthday, and they should be well sourced on the author's page. Cheers! ~ Ningauble 14:08, 5 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for responding. :-) I might get involved in QOTD later on. – RyanCross (talk) 03:41, 6 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: Bud Selig

edit

Looks great! I can tell a lot of research went into this. One thing I would suggest is to pick some generally-accepted/standardized way of using shortened cites, if the source was already used earlier on the page, so as not to repeat the entire cite again later. Nice work, Cirt (talk) 10:59, 24 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I will try to do that. Thank you for the advice and compliments. :-) — RyanCross @ 11:02, 24 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

VfD all the Simpson characters

edit

Since you asked [1], there is also Marge Simpson, Comic Book Guy, and the related List of Simpsons Prank Calls. The last is mostly sourced, but to the extent it is not just duplicative it stretches copyright limits of the main article(s). ~ Ningauble 15:08, 24 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Question

edit

Where can i find sourced quotes for something? --72.73.93.50 21:52, 26 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, it good place to start would be doing a Google search on the quotes (that's what I do). I did a Google search myself but didn't find anything. Hopefully, you or someone else will have better luck. Anyway, after that, look for a source that mentions where the quote was quoted. If you find that, then add it to the article. The article you created was unsourced, so if it isn't sourced in five days, it will be deleted as I proposed for it to be deleted. Note that websites such as thinkexist.com, brainyquote, etc. only list quotes but don't mention where the quote was from, so try to find websites such as news articles, etc. Thanks, RyanCross @ 22:03, 26 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ryan i found a sourced site. i just dont know how to format it. --72.73.93.50 22:11, 26 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Like I said above, thinkexist.com only lists quotes, and it doesn't show where it came from. The second source is from Giocities, a source where I believe any person can create, so it is probably unreliable information. RyanCross @ 22:26, 26 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey, you had initially prodded this, but I did some research, cleaned up the page, removed all the unsourced quotes, and added 15 sourced quotes. So I went ahead and removed the PROD tag myself, hope that's okay. Cheers, Cirt (talk) 11:31, 31 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

User warnings

edit

When warning a user for removing content (as here for this), rather than for adding nonsense, you can use {{test2a}} instead of {{test2}}. The corresponding level 1 notice is {{remove}}, but for full page blanking I start at level 2. See Category:User warning templates (and don't ask me why they are named the way they are). ~ Ningauble 02:46, 15 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

re: Speedy to Prod instead

edit

See the strange title of the page "Now It's Just Getting Sad" - was created by a brand new account. This appears to be an incorrect title - I suggest you check prior deletion history for Martinez & Caldwell. Also, note that the page was created with a "cleanup" notice - dated This page has been listed as needing cleanup since 2008-07-24. - quite odd, if indeed the page is new and was created for the first time today. Cirt (talk) 06:58, 23 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hey, sorry but after I saw the deletion logs for Martinez & Caldwell, I put the db tag back. Hope that's okay, considering the number of times it was previously deleted, and then recreated under this new bogus title. Cirt (talk) 07:01, 23 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Then that's a totally different story. I looked as the article's history, and you are correct. Now speedy deleted as it was previously deleted subject under a different title. Good catch. ;-) — RyanCross (talk) 07:07, 23 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps some investigation is due of the new account as well - most likely a sock of the account that was previously disruptive at Martinez & Caldwell? Cirt (talk) 07:10, 23 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Ah, I see you got it already, nice work. Cirt (talk) 07:10, 23 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Error?

Why did you delete the article, "Pi mnemonics" yesterday? Was there an error?

J. Meyer 1/31/0966.82.9.80 13:35, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I searched "Pi mnemonics", but got no result. You are probably looking for one of the articles in Wikiquote:Votes for deletion/Category:Mnemonics. All the articles nominate for deletion in that page were deleted yesterday as the community decided to delete them. General consensus was to delete (well, it was a unanimous vote so...), so I closed the WQ:VFD and deleted the nominated pages. The article you're looking for might have been one of them, because there was never an article called "Pi mnemonics", but I did delete a bunch of articles in that category. — RyanCross (talk) 16:27, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. I should have been more specific. The reference (Pi mnemonics) was to a link (which is still there) in the Wikipedia entry for Pi. J. Meyer 2/3/09

Hmm... I'm still having trouble finding the link. Do you mind linking for me? — RyanCross (talk) 00:17, 8 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Andrzej Majewski (deleted article)

edit

I just wanted to ask you, why are you so speedy with deleting the article, hmm? And why don't you delete also the Wikipedia article since the quotations there are the very same as the ones in Wikiquote. I've just borrowed a book with Majewski's aphorisms just to be able to put verifiable sources in the wiki, but, to my surprise, the article was already gone. So, please think before you act next time a few days longer, ok? Curdeius 19:46, 1 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

All proposed deletions are speedy deleted after it has been proposed for a week. This is exactly what happened to your article. It is normal standards. Though, you may request for undeletion at anytime. Just confirm so here, and I'll be happy to undelete the article so you can add sources to the article. Thank you. — RyanCross (talk) 22:33, 1 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

The subpage is at Wikiquote:Requests for bureaucratship/RyanCross, if you wish to be considered you can accept there and perhaps make a brief statement. I transcluded it onto WQ:RFA as well. Good luck! Cirt (talk) 08:14, 16 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi RyanCross. I posted a couple questions at your RfB. Don't worry about right or wrong answers, consider it food for thought. ~ Ningauble 18:43, 20 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your questions, I will take my time to answer them. But could you elaborate more on question one? I'm not 100% sure what you mean. Replying here is fine. Thanks. — RyanCross (talk) 22:59, 20 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Sure: The approach taken over at Wikipedia is that the role of a closer is to assess the consensus and certify the result, not to decide the question. There, closers generally limit their remarks, if any, to explaining their conclusion about the consensus or about procedural matters, and refrain from offering an opinion about the issue at hand. That philosophy makes good sense to me, as it avoids giving any potential appearance that one person is acting as judge, jury, and executioner.
Wikiquote does not have any binding rules about this. I raised the question to stimulate thought, not just for you but for the community at large. I thank you for affording the opportunity to raise the question, and hope you don't mind (much) being put on the spot. ~ Ningauble 00:27, 21 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Ah, yes, I understand what you mean, and I have now answered your questions on my RfB. And it's perfectly fine to ask questions, as I of course want others to know more about me, my thoughts, and how I will do as a bureaucrat. Maybe I could even improve from these questions you have asked me. It's a great learning experience. Anyway, thanks for asking! — RyanCross (talk) 01:21, 21 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Questions regarding the Diablo Page.

edit

Hi RyanCross,

First of all I would like to thank the adminstrations of WikiQuote for taking your time writing back to me. Many thanks. Secondly I sorry for using my Diablo article like a message board. as from this moment I'm quite the newbie in editing and using the editor, this being the first time I ever published an article. But with given the profound information and guidelines in a general terms on how to structure and control the content. I now feel more comfortable and relaxed with that task.

However, when I was scrolling the guides and sucking in the knowledge from the two recommended guides "Quotability", "Limits on quotations". I couldn't help of notice the following lines in one of them.

"Wikiquote, consisting of the words of notable people, is prone by its very nature to exceed fair use. A great deal of vigilance by our community of editors will be needed to keep articles within advisable limits, all the more so because these limits have proved difficult to define and are subject to much interpretation."

I don't know if the content of the Diablo page is under a advisable limit in its current state. But my statement to this is the following..

In the present situation the Diablo Page consist of quotations from the five major cinematics seen in the second game, none from the first game. Quotations from the Bosses (currently counted a total of 1 in the first game and 5 in the second game. Quotations from a amount of major persons you meet throughout the gaming world inside the first and second video game series. I agree to terms that its content on the given subject is rather immense and detailed.. However, when browsing the two other game-generic titles pages I get a sense that those quotations content is also rather broadly spread around there gaming world and domain.

Also mentioning the two articles, the "Warcraft" and "Starcraft", both seems to have a certain similarity in its length of used quotes as the Diablo page. Nevertheless, I don't see any warning on those pages. Isn't that.. Strange?

Finally, sorry for using official Diablo images in the Quotations article. Vermin 22:13, 28 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Not a problem. We're always here to help. Now, about the article... I admit, I'm not the best when it comes to these types of articles, so my help wouldn't be as helpful. I suggest maybe directing your attention to User:Cirt, User:Ningauble, or User:InvisibleSun. They probably will be able to answer your concern more clearly then how I would, as this is an area I'm not very experienced at. Thanks. — RyanCross (talk) 00:41, 29 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wikiquote interlanguage communication

edit

Hi, I'm Nemo from the Italian language Wikiquote and I'm writing you (via a bot) because you're an administrator of Wikiquote in this language; please excuse me if you've received this message more than once.
The simple thing that I want you to know is that Wikiquote has an official mailing list, Wikiquote-l, which can be used to communicate and discuss matters which interest all Wikiquotes. This mailing list was last "advertised" about three or four years ago, before many of us joined Wikiquote, and is currently almost not participated at all by Wikiquote users and very low-traffic. I ask you to subscribe, to participate in discussions and to write about your Wikiquote.
I love Wikiquote, as you probably do, and I think that we should be proud of what we do here, share our experiences and good practices to make Wikiquote better and raise awareness of it.
I remind you that Meta-Wiki is the best place for Wikimedia projects coordination, and it contains several pages about Wikiquote, and specifically this talk page which can be used to discuss about Wikiquote if you don't like mailing lists.
I hope that this message has been useful for you. Cheers, Nemo (write me) 10:11, 14 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

I was just about to sleep actually - important interview tomorrow. Once I get back, I may be able to close, but if another bureaucrat closes it before me, that'll do.

An important message about renaming users

edit

Dear RyanCross,

I am cross-posting this message to many places to make sure everyone who is a Wikimedia Foundation project bureaucrat receives a copy. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat.

As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide single-user login finalisation (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully.

Why is this happening? As currently stated at the global rename policy, a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects.

The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed.

Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called Global renamers. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the requests for global permissions page on 1 September, a week from now.

In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to the request page for a global rename.

Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the SUL finalisation, read over the Help:Unified login page on Meta and leave a note on the talk page there, or on the talk page for global renamers. You can also contact me on my talk page on meta if you would like. I'm working as a bridge between Wikimedia Foundation Engineering and Product Development, Wikimedia Stewards, and you to assure that SUL finalisation goes as smoothly as possible; this is a community-driven process and I encourage you to work with the Stewards for our communities.

Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) talk 18:24, 25 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Inactive?

Hi, I noticed you have not edited here in quite a long time, and are listed as an inactive administrator. Do you think there is any chance you will be back? Cheers! -- Cirt (talk) 19:58, 7 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

I'm currently in school, but I can perform actions upon notification, and I can check in once in a while. However, I won't be "back" in the way that you're probably thinking. Thanks for the message! — RyanCross (talk) 22:30, 7 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Would it be alright with you, until you can be back actively, if I request with your permission, for your sysop and bureaucrat rights to be temporarily removed, at Meta by a Steward? -- Cirt (talk) 23:29, 7 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Sure. How can I request my permissions back if I do become active? — RyanCross (talk) 06:21, 8 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Just request it from any Bureaucrat, and since it was "without prejudice" and not "under a cloud", should be totally non-controversial. -- Cirt (talk) 11:22, 8 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
That might be a good idea but there is not, at this time, any policy for Bureaucrats to do that. ~ Ningauble (talk) 14:27, 8 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Whenever you wish to become active again with advanced rights, RyanCross, I'm sure we can post about it to the community, and as you had advanced rights before, it'll be non-controversial to have a Bureaucrat add you back. Cheers! -- Cirt (talk) 14:29, 8 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
