Editing new VfD page

When I went to vote on the Wikiquote:Votes for deletion/Charles Miller, Jr. page, the Show Preview for my vote appeared as an edit of the Template:Vfd-new2 page. Being the techno-ignoramus that I am, I wanted to ask first if there is something here that I'm missing. It surprised me to see, instead of the words of your nomination and the vote closing time, nothing but the format of the Template:VfD-new2 page. Extra Spacing for Plays and Poems

I doubt this user had any interest in the POV of Islam, but was instead trying to provoke RC patrollers, especially sysops. Please note that the above two topics, "Hello" and "Umm...", were created by two of three usernames established within 3 minutes of each other, using uncommon Unicode characters in an apparently deliberate attempt to confuse readers. Samuel Adams

We originally divided quotes into Sourced and Attributed, but lately we have begun to replace Attributed with Unsourced because we found that people often weren't quite sure what Attributed means. They would ask why a quote was listed as Attributed when no source of the quote was given. That wouldn't be a proper attribution, they would say. We'd reply that this was actually the point: an Attributed quote was one which hadn't yet been sourced. For this reason we now use Unsourced to make it clearer that no sources exist for those quotes. - InvisibleSun 02:10, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Adding sources from Google Book Search

I noticed that you reverted a quote that someone removed from William S. Burroughs, but which you confirmed was accurate using Google Book Search. Might I ask that, when you check quotes that way, that you add the source information such a search provides? Since GBS gives the edition, ISBN (if available), and page number, sourcing the quote right then and there is a helpful increment toward our sourcing efforts. While reformatting the article, I noticed the ISBN for the book on Woodman's Wikipedia page. After adding the ISBN to the Wikiquote article, I clicked on it to take me to Amazon.com (as seen here). Since it's a book for which a "Search Inside" function has been provided, I was able to find the quote and its page number. I've just made a reply in the current speedy deletion discussion raising similar questions in the matter of SD. It seems to me that our SD and Prod policies are in conflict to some extent. After having speedily deleted the Casey Calvert article, I restored it on the grounds that, even though it could be deleted per our SD rules, a notable person's article could be kept for a week in case someone might come along and make it suitable for keeping. Since Calvert died just a few days ago, I thought it possible that one or more contributors, including the person who posted the article, might be prompted by the Prod to add quotations. - InvisibleSun 03:37, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Goodness, this is certainly an unexpected honour! I'm very pleased to have been asked, but it wouldn't be a good idea for me to accept. Thanks. I think I do have dates for them, Kendall's book has good footnotes. I'll scare them up today when I get time. They are already in chronological order, fortunately. I've got a couple of other resources on the period in question, too. I eventually want to put together a Wars of the Roses theme page. I have created User:Davenbelle to prevent impersonation; this was my original username; I don't want it, I just don't want it appearing later. The account User:Senang Hati is another impersonator; my en:wp Jack account used to be named this and it was re-created and began harassing me. The articles w:Senang Hati Foundation and w:Smile Foundation of Bali were started by me (see [1]). I would like both of these accounts blocked for good. Honoré de Balzac

I'd noticed you were working on the Balzac page yesterday, but didn't have time to check in on much of what you were doing until a few minutes ago. As I've stated on my talk page, I will likely have only a very limited amount of time to check in here for at least a few weeks, and only have time to make a brief comment now.
I know it is necessary to replace crude and unpublished translations which occur on some pages with published ones, but I strongly feel that previously published or widely quoted translations shouldn't be simply replaced by other ones, no matter how superior in some aspects they might be considered to be. This is especially true when adding quotes from recent translations, as the older forms are usually more widely quoted and people might be looking for quotes in that form and not find them because newer translations have been used to replace them. I'd strongly recommend re-adding those translations which you've recently replaced with newer ones, at least as "Variant translations". ~ Kalki 12:38, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

The translations I've been using aren't new: the translators (Ellen Marriage, Katharine Prescott Wormeley, James Waring et al) date from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. I preferred to use them because:

1) They include the Wikisource and Project Gutenberg translations, which allows for wiki consistency and for convenient online referencing.

2) They figure prominently on Google Book Search, which suggests that they are still widely in use.

3) Using one particular translation for each book in the subsections means that translators don't have to named with each quote; they can be named instead at the beginnings of the sections.

4) I found, as I was sourcing, that the translations already on the Balzac page were almost never traceable to the original sources, i.e., the translated texts of Balzac's books. They would usually appear only in secondary sources, such as quotation books, where they weren't sourced beyond Balzac's name, and often with a number of little variants which suggested that the translations were not particularly dependable. Although the presence of these translations in secondary sources might mean that some readers will know these versions better, should they take precedence over quotes from the translated books themselves? In a question of conflicting priorities, I would argue that verifiability is even more important than familiarity. While working on sourcing the Unsourced quotes, I often found that the only way I could trace them was actually to work backward: starting with the likely French words or phrases; discovering the sources from the French texts; and finding the English translations based on where I now knew them to be. My basic purpose in working on the Balzac page was to provide the original French; but in doing so I concluded, for the reasons stated already, that it would be better whenever necessary to make changes.

Hi, again. As I was building that I saw that there were a large number of LOTF quotes in the Golding article. I had been thinking that stuff could merge the other was -- or possibly to a Lord of the Flies page. I'm obviously new here, so I'll follow other's leads. There used to be a separate page for Lord of the Flies; but I merged it with the William Golding page, which up until then was only a stub article. Our preference in articles is for authors rather than books and for books rather than characters. It's only when an author's page becomes unwieldy that we would prefer to have separate book pages. The Golding article, however, is only about 12,000 bytes at present. Likewise, the only time a character article is advised is for a character who recurs in numerous works, e.g., Sherlock Holmes. As you can see by the Category:Articles to be merged page, we're having a hard time resisting the tide of editors who prefer books and characters to authors.

I do indeed have a copy of Lord of the Flies: it's the old "Casebook" edition from 1964. - InvisibleSun 15:34, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the pointers, I'll keep 'em in mind. I looked at the history of these pages after I posted the above and see how it went. If you know any of my en:wp history you'll know that I've a dim view of non-notable articles on pop-culture prolefeed and the in-universe focus that is common there. A problem, in some cases, with focusing on authors may be that tv shows are written by a staff and don't have a single author.

FWIW, I see myself as more like 'Ralph' than 'Jack'. Only one person on en:wp recognized the name. The copy of LOTF that I have currently is a '63 Penguin edition that's rather faded and frail; my newer copy is out on loan to someone. Cheers, User:Jack Merridew a.k.a. List of films

Just a comment: I saw that you had deleted a few red-linked pages from this list. Usually when I am cleaning up this (and other such lists), if there is a red-link page I move it to the Requested section rather than just deleting it (and I move pages that have been created up from Requested to the created section). I think that people just don't realize that there are two parts to the list and they should put ones that have not yet been created under 'Requested'. ~ UDScott 19:21, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

A quote is considered sourced when it can be traced to a book, newspaper, magazine, etc., providing evidence that the quote appears to be genuine. It can also be viewed on an online link when one is available. On the Wikipedia page for Jacques Plante, for example, some of the facts were sourced from a Hockey Hall of Fame profile of Plante. If this had been the source of a Jacques Plante quotation on Wikiquote, the source line after the quote would look like this:

** Quoted in Kevin Shea, "One on One with Jacques Plante," Hockey Hall of Fame.com (2005-05-24)

This shows the reader that the quote can be traced to an interview/profile of Plante. An unsourced quote, on the other hand, is one where either no source is provided or the alleged source turns out merely to state that the person said it, with no evidence, as in the quotegarden.com page you had linked to.
