This is the talk page for discussing improvements to the Demolition Man (film) page.

This article falls within a proposed limits on quotations policy.

The subject of this article is a film, and as a result, the proposal would set a limitation of five quotes per hour (about one quote every 12 minutes).

If you would like to add another quote to the page, you should consider whether to remove one that is already there in order to keep within the bounds of fair use of copyright material.
For reference, the length of this work is: 115 minutes.

In a greasy spoon or with a greasy spoon? edit

A greasy spoon is a restaurant, in Edgar's speech here it says he sits 'with a greasy spoon', I think the quote is 'IN a greasy spoon'.

Forget to tag that first post, sorry, I fixed the quote, it had a number of issues. 24.225.23.137 20:08, 30 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

The above comment from 2012 was correct but in 2020 an editor called EagleStorm still inexplicably managed to get it wrong.[1]
This quote is popular and can easily be found and checked on YouTube [2] [3] It is clear he says " I'm the kind of guy that likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wondered gee should I have the t-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecue ribs"
Please check the quotes before changing. -- 109.76.209.8 14:08, 23 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
EagleStorm again restored his mistakes[4] the quote is wrong but instead of checking it he reverts, does not discuss and instead blames me. Please check the original film before changing quotes. -- 109.78.193.104 16:01, 28 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
I rewatched this scene and I believe this user is correct - I have reverted it back. ~ UDScott (talk) 16:46, 28 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Taglines edit

The film has only one tagline, it seems pointless to have it at the top of the article and also at the bottom of the article. Isn't once enough? -- 109.78.217.4 16:47, 18 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Quotes deleted edit

Several quotes were deleted and others were erroneously "corrected" by a recent edit.[5] It would be helpful if editors made their changes in smaller edits, not big block edits. The Wikipedia article for this film includes a link to the shooting script[6] and there are many short clips of this film are available on YouTube which can also be helpful to verify that quotes don't just match the script but also match the final film.[7]

It isn't clear why quotes in general were deleted, or why certain ones in particular were deleted. Some of the quotes included don't seem particularly interesting or notable to me. (The quote about justifying the property destruction by Spartan seems to be a good representation of his character, caring more about saving lives than the demolition he causes, and I would have kept that over other quotes. Similarly Phoenix talking about the freedom to be an asshole seems more important that other quotes)

Maybe instead of deleting some of the quotes could be cut down to the essentials? For example I would cut out the first few lines from Simon Phoenix at the kiosk and start from the line "Come on, HAL! Where are the goddamn guns?" Also maybe cut down the Simon Phoenix quote "All right, gentlemen, let's review." to just that opening paragraph not the whole conversation.

One of the most memorable things about this film is the unexplained "three seashells", it might be good idea to include related to that, maybe "He doesn't know how to use the three seashells!" spoken by Rob Schneider. No mention of Taco Bell either. If possible it would be helpful to know why people thought certain quotes should be included and others deleted. -- 109.78.217.4 17:16, 18 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

I don't understand why anyone felt it was essential to the quote to include the dialog from the Museum announcement system, I wouldn't have included it at all. It also seems a strange choice to include it as if it was a character called "Museum PDA". Not only is it strange to write in a made up character name instead of including it as a staging note, it is an especially weird choice of made up character name to include an unexplained acronym since PDA means Public Display of Affection. The correct term is a PA for Public Address. Instead of trying to fix that quote as it is I'd shorten it, start with something similar to [Phoenix shoots the door open with a cannon] and then skip to "I'm a blast from the past!" -- 109.78.217.4 22:40, 18 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
Another delete, but it is not clear what the edit summary "loq trim" is supposed to mean [8] Please avoid abbreviations and jargon or at least wikilink to the relevant guidelines, like Wikipedia editors usually do. I see that the article was previous much much longer and was even large deletes were made.[9] If space is an issue I don't see the benefit in keeping long tracts of dialog, when we could select more interesting one liners and short quotes.
Also the edit repeated erroneous corrections I have reverted once already. This is Wikiquote, you can't correct (perceived) grammar mistakes in quotes.
As I explained already in my edit summary but the brand name is w:Oscar Mayer Wiener which was correct, and "Meyer" is definitely not correct.
Also Cocteau says "Your repeated violation" not "Your repeated violations", firstly no one should be trying to grammar correct quotes, and secondly I checked both the script[10] and the film, "violation" singular is correct.
Please do not delete without providing a clear edit summary explaining why. Please do not attempt to correct quotes again. -- 109.79.160.210 20:28, 2 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
I've looked for more information and seems like the editor "loq trim" was probably referring to WQ:LOQ which vaguely explains that only a limited number of quotes are allowed (and gives the example of 41 quotes being too many for half hour tv show). If that was the intention it is not clear why the shortcut wikilink wasn't used in the edit summary, or why there was nothing to explain which particular quotes were deleted and not others. -- 109.79.160.210 20:41, 2 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
