Notes Naast werk van Franse academieschilders had Louisa Willet-Holthuysen een voorkeur voor schilderijen van kunstenaars die in Oosterbeek en omgeving werkzaam waren. De ‘buitenschilders’ onder hen, onder wie J.W. Bilders, worden beschouwd als voorlopers van de Haagse School. Van deze kunstenaar kocht Louisa in februari 1868 voor 1.000 gulden (€ 9.096,-) dit kapitale doek. Het schilderij ademt de lome sfeer van een warme zomerdag in het uiterwaardengebied in de buurt van Oosterbeek, waar koeien verkoeling zoeken in het water. Louisa had altijd al een zwak voor eigentijdse schilderijen met ‘koebeesten’, zo blijkt uit een eigenhandige aantekening uit 1858.
