Text Appearing After Image: Main Portal of the Ruins of the Rudramala at Sidhpur. History of All Nations, Vol. II., page 321. HINDU MONASTERIES. 321 Mahabalipur, near Sadras, directly upon the sea, and south of Madras.Here the exterior of the chaitya is shown, of which from the exca-vated temples one can form no conception. It consists of a row ofpillared arcades, and also of a number of cells ^vith niches and semi-circular covering; the narrow pass in the rear is tinished in amanner to correspond with the apse-Hke interior. This finish againoccurs in the rear of the temple of Durga, väie of Shiva, at Aiwalli(in the Bombay Presidency), the fagade and one side of which areshown in the adjoining illustration (Plate XVII.) ; it has beenhence conjectured that the structure was originally a chaitya. Theupper story is destroyed. A similar temple of Durga is situated onMount Girnar at Junagadh ; it rises from a strong substructure, andthe ascent to it is by a staircase.
