Summary

Description

Lampe, Nishapur, IX-Xe siècle. Stéatite sculptée, décor incisé et gravé. This is a Vedic/Avestan lamp. The 12 nozzles meant for lighting cotton wicks (and the saucer for 'clarified butter') represent the 12 Zodiac signs. Such lamps are used for invoking 'God'. The origins of this design lies in the Vedas, specifically Yajur-Veda and such lamps are used in India even today.
