Puede que esta obra fuera la imagen de culto del templo consagrado a Júpiter Tonante en Roma. En tal caso, sería la mandada a esculpir por Domiciano en el siglo I para sustituir, con leves variantes, la estatua de Leocares (siglo IV adC) instalada en el santuario por Augusto, su fundador. Llevaba el rayo en la mano derecha y apoyaba la izquierda en un cetro, iconografía desconocida por el restaurador barroco a quien se deben los brazos.
