| Description |
English: This is the modern outdoor chapel at the site where St. Paul likely baptized Lydia, the first Philippian believer in Christ. The book of Acts describes the event as taking place in the river, just outside the city, near the bridge. It appears that the small Jewish community in Philippi had been meeting there for prayer each Sabbath because they lacked a synagogue building. This site lies just outside the NW gate of Roman Philippi and only a few meters from the foundations of the Roman bridge. Nearby stands the modern Greek Orthodox chapel of St. Lydia. Between the remains of the Roman road (the via Egnatia) and the river several grave stone markers and sarcophagi are visible.
Afrikaans: Die moderne buitelugkapel op die oewer waar Paulus waarskynlik vir Lydia gedoop het, die eerste Philippenser om gekersten te word. Handelinge beskryf die geleentheid wat in die rivier, net buite die stad, en naby die brug plaasgevind het. Op Sabbatdae was dit blykbaar die gebedsvergaderplek vir die klein Joodse gemeenskap te Philippi, aangesien daar geen sinagoge was nie. Dit is net buite die noordwespoort van Romeinse Philippi, en slegs meters van die fondasie van die Romeinse brug. Aanliggend is die moderne Grieks-Ortodokse kapel van Sint Lydia.
