Season 1
editHeaven's Half Hour [1.01]
edit- Karen Page: This Hell's Kitchen nostalgia is running pretty thin with you guys, you realize that, right?
- Foggy Nelson: Not nostalgia; reverence for the past, yet hope for the future.
- Karen: Oh, that is some next-level closing argument BS right there!
- Foggy: Too much?
- Matt Murdock: Nostalgia or not, it's hard to believe Cherry's retiring.
- Karen: So many retiring, leaving -- I mean, it's thirty percent of the force in the last two years.
- Foggy: Are those numbers legit?
- Karen: My numbers are always legit.
- Matt: I really wouldn't argue with her. Still, the city finds other ways to protect itself.
- Foggy: [to Matt, who is about to suit up as Daredevil] Look, I'm sorry. I-- Maybe I didn't wanna give you an excuse.
- Vanessa: You left the bed I sat beside for months while you recovered. And for what? And now you walk in here and end a meeting with five families by simply standing in the doorway?
- Fisk: You've kept them in line. They respect you.
- Vanessa: The respect the money I make them. Protection makes people scared. Profit makes them loyal.
- Matt: As you know, I've stood in this court many times. Delivered summations, called witnesses, defended the innocent to the best of my ability. Although as I sit here on the other side of the court, it occurs to me that justice will not be served today. It won't be served because, whatever sentence is passed, Foggy Nelson -- only his mother called him Franklin -- will still be dead. It won't be served beca--
- [Matt hears Karen walk in. Pauses.]
- Matt: Apologies, Your Honor. It won't be served because I-I don't get to see him again. We don't get to see Foggy again, today. Or tomorrow, or ever. Because my friend is dead. Killed on the whim of a violent and disturbed man. A self-styled assassin with a grudge, out to murder his perceived enemies. But, in the absence of justice, the court can punish this man. And I urge you to do so, to the fullest extent that the law allows. Because that punishment, that is the closest that any of us will ever get to justice.
- Matt: I refuse to believe a tragedy had to destroy everything.
- Karen: But it did. What are you gonna do about Daredevil?
- Matt: I made a promise to myself that I would let the system handle it. All of it. Besides, I'm not him anymore, and I won't let myself be.
- Karen: And you think that that will help?
- Matt: I don't know. It doesn't make it worse.
- Matt: If I didn't know better -- know him better -- I'd say he sounds sincere. Like maybe he wants to do something for this city.
- Cherry: Look who you're talking about! The man crushes every--
- Matt: I know. I know! You think I don't know? I know. Well, if this city actually elects him, then... maybe New York's getting the mayor it deserves.
- Cherry: You ask me, that's pretty goddamn cynical, Matt.
- Matt: Mm-hm. Or maybe I'm just wising up.
- Matt: You're a real man of the people now.
- Fisk: A rich man, by his very nature, is self-serving. A-A mayor, a mayor serves his city.
- Matt: Ah.
- Fisk: You don't seem entirely convinced.
- Matt: Could you blame me? Considering you've tried to kill me a few times over the years...
- Fisk: As you have.
- Matt: No, no. Incarcerate, maybe. Kill? Never.
- Fisk: I wonder if your darker half would agree.
- Matt: That part of my life is over.
- Fisk: Mm. Well, tragedy can transform a man. About your friend -- I had nothing to do with his death, I kept that promise.
- Matt: Hm. But now the Kingpin is back.
- Fisk: No. No, he's not. My time away, I... Well... Well, let's say I followed a road less-traveled. And at its end, I found a new man.
- Matt: The mayor of New York.
- Fisk: Mm, soon.
- Fisk: I was told you tried to kill Benjamin Poindexter that night. It's hard... it's hard to come to terms with a violent nature. Hating the power it has over us.
- Matt: I was raised to believe in grace. That we can be touched by the divine and transformed into a better person. So if you say to me that you're a new man, I say "fine". But you should also know I was raised to believe in retribution. So if you step out of line, I will be there.
- Fisk: This caution that you're giving me, who's it from? Matt Murdock, or...? You liked being on that rooftop with Dex. You liked how it felt, didn't you? Giving no quarter, dispensing justice...
- Matt: Just stay in your lane. I'll do the same.
- Fisk: I'm going to be mayor of this town. And when I am, I will not tolerate people running around in silly costumes. The rule of law will prevail. And should you go back to any of your old activities, there will be consequences.
- Matt: Well, then. It appears we really do understand each other.
- Fisk: Mm, I love a man who rises above his nature. Good luck with that, Murdock.
- Matt: Good day, sir.
Optics [1.02]
edit- Fisk: These meet-and-greets... Can't we push them?
- Shelia Rivera: These first few days are critical, optics are gonna matter. Establishing connections is how we set the tone with the stakeholders who can make or break your agenda. And let's be honest, a lot of these people absolute hate you.
- [A pause. Fisk laughs.]
- Fisk: I'm used to that.
- Fisk: The city is broken. I said I'd fix it.
- Shelia: Sir, the first hundred days are about settling in. Getting a feel for the office. Try anything big now, you're painting a target on your back.
- Fisk: Good. Targets draw attention to problems.
- Shelia: You hired me because I know how politics work in New York City. And right now, it's all about maintaining the status quo.
- Buck Cashman: So your advice for the newly-inaugurated mayor of New York City is that he do nothing?
- Daniel Blake: Look, play softball in there, okay? I'm calling in a favor.
- BB Urich: Wait, I thought you said you were his guy.
- Daniel: I am. I might've embellished a little bit.
- BB: Wow! You know, I can't tell if you're an idiot or an operator.
- Daniel Blake: Well, maybe I'm... I don't know what I am.
- Commissioner Gallo: It still makes no sense to me, this mayor thing. So you gave up your criminal empire for what? So you could have less money, less power? So you could kow-tow to an Italian sunovabitch in a cemetery?
- Fisk: How are we gonna fix this issue?
- Gallo: Do you know who Samuel Vance was? No, of course you don't. Mayor Vance was the mayor of New York in 1874, he served for one month. It is my personal mission to make sure that your term is shorter than his. I see right through you, Fisk. You're not a mayor who loves this city, you're a whiny kid who wants everyone to love him. A monster trying to rewrite his legacy. Well, guess what? It's too late. Once a thug, always a thug. See you around, "Kingpin".
- Cherry: An NYPD cop is dead. And any time that happens, a big machine gets turned on to try and figure out what went wrong, and to punish whoever killed the cop. Punish them severely. And that machine has no off-switch. It just goes and goes until somebody pays.
- Matt: This is a tough case, Hector. A cop is dead. And the only way I can win it is if I know every way I can lose it.
- Cherry: You know, for what it's worth? I like the Matt Murdock I've seen this year -- the guy that went out and found his own way, got out of the Kitchen, wears a... normal suit. He's doing some good.
The Hollow of His Hand [1.03]
edit- Hector: Luquillo is a beach near where I'm from in Puerto Rico. To me, it's the most beautiful place on Earth. White sand, palm trees, and the Coquí, this little tree frog. Doesn't croak. It sings its name. [he whistles] Ay, I laugh because... the tourists, man, they think it's noisy and annoying but, to us boricuas, it's a magical sound. And the Coquí, it mates for life, right? So every sunset, thousands of these frogs start calling out to their one and only love. It's the music of the island.
- Matt: Officer Powell, good morning. I'm told you have a black eye. I hope everything is okay.
- Powell: Yeah, don't worry about it.
- Matt: You know, there's thing they say in boxing: The, uh, the best cure for a black eye is fast hands.
- District Attorney Hochberg: Objection!
- Judge Cooper: Sustained. Come on, Mr. Murdock.
- Luca: I don't take orders from the mayor's errand boy!
- Buck Cashman: I don't work for the mayor. I work for the man.
- Vanessa: I don't like watching everything fall apart.
- Fisk: I respect that. You wanted to keep the peace. Sometimes, peace needs to be broken. Chaos must reign, just for a moment, to build a stronger order.
- [Hector is testifying.]
- Matt: You decided to risk your own safety to help a stranger. Wasn't the first time, was it?
- Hector: I-- I don't understand.
- Matt: Well, I'm just saying you put yourself in harm's way before. Many times. The question is, why?
- Hector: Because he was in trouble.
- Matt: You intervened that night 'cause you're a hero.
- Kirsten: [realizing] Matt, don't do this.
- [Matt retrieves something from an open leather bag.]
- Kirsten: Matt, don't do this--!
- [He pulls out the White Tiger mask and displays it before the court.]
- Matt: Mr. Ayala, yes or no, are you the vigilante known as the White Tiger?
- Hector: I don't think you understand. Being the White Tiger is more than just putting on a suit. It's who I am. It's a calling. I didn't choose it, it chose me. You might as well ask me to stop breathing.
- Matt: There are other ways to help. Other ways to contribute. Ways that don't require a mask. You have to think about your family now. They need you. And for what it's worth, I think you might be surprised at how much you don't miss... being him.
- Matt: Mr. Ayala, let's talk about Mr. and Mrs. Burgos. Why would you risk your life by running toward a burning car to save strangers?
- Hector: It's the right thing to do.
- Matt: What about Gianna Moreno? You again put yourself in harm's way. Why?
- Hector: ...It's the right thing to do.
- Matt: And when you saw Officer Barlow was in trouble, you ran in when other's would've run out. Why?
- Hector: It's the right thing to do.
- Matt: The police said that Hector attacked them, that he came out of nowhere. That's what they said. But why would Hector, the White Tiger... Why would he do this without the amulet that gives him extraordinary strength and power? Would any of you walk into battle with one arm tied behind your back? I wouldn't. Every night, Hector Ayala goes out and risks his life to keep his neighborhood safe, to protect his community. So ask yourselves... does this sound like the type of man who would murder a police officer in cold blood? He is a man of integrity. The community says so... The police say so. The mask doesn't make the man. And whether Hector Ayala's wearing the White Tiger suit or not, he's a hero. Thank you.
- [Murdock takes his seat. Hochberg stands.]
- Hochberg: Yeah, you know, every morning, I get up, I kiss my wife, I call my kids. I go to work to serve the people of this great city, I go to church every Sunday, I sit in my usual pew, I give money to my parish, then I drive out to Queens to see my mother. Does that make me a "good" person? That was a trick question. See, frankly, it's a false premise. Good people can do bad things, bad people can do good things. Humans, all of us, we're-- we're... messy, complicated! Capable of good, capable of evil. Yes, Hector Ayala might have done some good things. Does that make him incapable of doing a bad thing? Of course not. Do you know what happens to a person when they get hit by a train? When you have 200,000 pounds of steel slam into you? All of your bones break, all of your organs are eviscerated, your body twists up like a circus balloon full of blood. But here's the kicker, you're still alive. You don't actually die until they back the train up and then your body, it just bursts. And that is exactly what happened to Officer Shanahan when Hector Ayala pushed him in front of that train. But we're supposed to be okay with that, right? Because he's done some nice things for people. Because it was the "right thing to do". Look around you. These men and women you see sitting here, they're officers of the law. They took an oath to protect, even in the face of danger. And every single day, these brave men and women show up to serve the people of this city -- to serve you, to serve me. And they do all that... without a mask. If Hector's sole intent was to do good for this community, why was he hiding?! Because the last time I checked, real heroes don't need to hide.
- Matt: You see, my old partner and I, straight out of law school, we were so broke, we pooled about everything we had together for an office bottle of O'Melveny's. Only broke it open when we won. Needless to say, the first bottle lasted a very long time. Just a nice little reminder that, once in a while, the system works.
- Heather: You're talking about your friend Foggy Nelson, right?
- Matt: Yeah...
- Heather: I was kinda wondering when you would.
- Matt: It's not easy. He certainly knew how to enjoy the, ah... The good moments when they came.
- Heather: Well then, here's to a man who cooks, a well-won case, and... Foggy Nelson. May God hold them all in the hollow of His hand.
- Fisk: Courts fail, juries get it wrong. I should know. And now, a masked vigilante, a murderer, is allowed to roam the streets. And a veteran of the NYPD lies dead. These vigilantes are a threat to any society that's based on the rule of law. A man who wears a mask to cover his face… is a coward. These vigilantes, they are not heroes. And I ran on a promise, and the acquittal of Hector Ayala demands that I keep it. The rule of law must prevail.
Sic Semper Systema [1.04]
edit- Angela Del Toro: I hate them, Mr. Murdock. I hate this city. No one is doing anything about it and no one's ever gonna do anything about it, 'cause he was just Hector from the Heights and they're the fucking cops!
- Heather: [to Fisk and Vanessa] Without forgiveness -- and I say this to both of you -- there can be no real healing. Forgiveness isn't just the highest act of love, it's the only way forward.
- Vanessa: My husband is capable of many, many things. Some of them extreme. Harming me is not one of them.
- Matt: You, uh, doing the Lord's work today?
- Powell: Yeah.
- Matt: Hey, you couldn't have a weak link out there, could you?
- Powell: What?
- Matt: Or maybe it was pride. Ayala made you look bad, didn't he? Actually, he flat-out embarrassed you, and you can't have that at the NYPD. Is that why you did it?
- Powell: ...You have yourself a nice day, counselor.
- Matt: He had a family. He had a future. And you took that away from him.
- [Powell pushes Matt up against a wall.]
- Powell: You can't see this badge, Counselor, 'cause you're fuckin' blind, but my grandfather wore this badge. My father wore this badge, my brother wears this badge, four of my fuckin' cousins wear this badge. They're all knuckleheads, but they're good cops. So I wear this fuckin' badge with honor, Counselor. And I don't know nothin' about nothin' to do with what happened to Hector Ayala.
- [Matt listens to the cop's heartbeat -- steady.]
- Powell: But here's something that I know -- an attorney who assaults a police officer? Who obstructs an active investigation? Not something that the Bar Association's gonna take lightly, if you catch my meaning. Not to mention, some of my more excitable colleagues on the force.
- Matt: Yeah. Only... you'd have to bring a few more than the last time we met, didn't you?
- Leroy: Look, I said probation and I meant probation!
- Matt: You took the stuff, Leroy! There is no probation to be had here, this is the best you're gonna get. So you tell me, how is this not a "good job, counselor" situation?
- Leroy: So you just wanna shove my ass into jail and I'm supposed to thank you? You just don't get it, do you? This shit never ends! Look, I've been jerked around by the system my whole life! Last time I got thirty days, you know what happened? I missed my SSI appointment and they cut my benefits. Bad enough trying to live on food stamps, but when they cut it? Man, it takes forever to get that shit back regular! Then you gotta start eating throw-away crap from supermarket dumpsters. Begging for change, for food... Yea-- And, yeah! Just once, I want a dessert. Something that don't taste like crap, something that tastes real good! So why'd I get the caramel corn? I liked that shit and it tastes good. And for that, they're willing to spend five times more to lock me up than they're willing to spend to feed me, and you come in here telling me that that's a gift?! That I should thank you?
- Fisk: [To Daniel] I've been around a lot of... Let's just say, I know how unreliable people can be. I've learned that loyalty and courage, two qualities that are... not easily replicated. [...] In the fullness of time, you'll make a better man. That said, if you ever do anything like that again, it will be the last thing that you ever do.
- Frank Castle: I'll tell you what I think, Red.
- Matt: Tell me. Tell me what you think.
- Frank: I don't think you came here for my help. See, I think you want my permission. You wanna get your hands on somebody, huh? You wanna hurt 'em. Maybe you're a little bit scared. A little scared about what that means.
- Matt: That's an interesting take, I like it. But ah, yeah, no. Sorry, buddy. Way off on that one.
- Frank: So full of shit, Counselor, so full of shit. You're guilty.
- Matt: Excuse me?
- Frank: Yeah. That guilt, that shame, that's my home, Red. I mean, I can see it on you, I can smell it on you, it's all over you.
- Matt I'm gonna come back another day, Frank -- maybe catch you at a better time.
- Frank: Yeah, you come at me with that horseshit about saving lives. How 'bout that friend of yours, you save his life? You lost him, didn't you, Red?
- Matt: It's not about him.
- Frank: Then say his name.
- Matt: It's not about him. It's not about him.
- Frank: Ah, for Christ's sake, say his name! Say his name, you coward, say his name! It's not about him? You hate yourself! It's eating you up because you ain't done a goddamn thing about it! So--
- [Matt lashes out, striking Frank.]
- Matt: Ah, goddamn it. Goddamn you. Sorry. I apologize.
- Frank: What are you sorry for? First honest thing you did, Red.
- Matt: It's not about him.
- Frank: No.
- Matt: Okay?
- Frank: It's all about him. He talks to you, doesn't he? You hear his voice. You do, don't you? Every time I stop moving, I still hear my little boy. I see him. And I hear his voice -- He says "Get 'em, Daddy. Every last single one of 'em, get 'em." That's why I do what I do. That's why it's eating at you. That's why it's eating at you, because you know you didn't do a goddamn thing, and it's gonna keep eating at you. It's gonna keep eating and eating and eating, there's no getting away with it, you understand?
- Matt: I ran him down.
- Frank: Oh, for Christ's sake.
- Matt: I did what I had to do, and I let the system take care of the rest.
- Frank: Oh, you and your goddamn sys-- You and your goddamn system! Christ! So what now?! Every day, Bullseye goes to the chow hole, eats his slop, you know he gets to breathe the same air that you breathe. You feel good about that?
- Matt: HE GOT LIFE!
- Frank: How 'bout ol' Foggy? Did he get life?
- Matt: Foggy... He was the... kindest, purest soul I ever met. And guys like you and me? We can work a lifetime and never measure up to his decency. Goodbye, Frank.
- Fisk: When I was a boy, I learned by watching my father. How to shake a man's hand. How to know when someone intends to cheat you. I learned the power of persuasion. How to move men's minds. Or break their bodies. But forgiveness? That wasn't a part of who he was.
- Matt: You ever feel like you're, uh, pushing a rock up a hill? And there's a bunch of people on the other side pushing it back?
With Interest [1.05]
edit- Matt: Mr. Khan, if I may: have you ever needed a defense attorney?
- Yusuf Khan: Me? No. Thankfully not.
- Matt: Well, if you ever do, it's often David vs. Goliath. The cops, the prosecution, public opinion... the entire system conspiring against you. We represent husbands, sons, daughters. People like you and me, Mr. Khan. So yeah, we may be over-leveraged for now, but we serve a vital function in a city that desperately needs us.
- Delvin: Detective Kim...
- Kim: Yes?
- Delvin: My job is to rob the bank, right? Your job is to prevent every hostage inside the bank from getting a fuckin' bullet to the fuckin' head.
- Matt: Just because I'm blind doesn't mean I need your pity.
- Delvin: Do I strike you as some sanctimonious twat trying to do right by the visually impaired, do I? I don't like you, solicitor. I don't like your kind. I don't like the clever little ways you twist the truth... I'm not letting you go, I'm getting rid of ya!
- [to Matt]
- Delvin: Jesus wept. I... A blind solicitor and-and-and, hold for it, an orphan? Are you bloody serious?! You're like a regular wee Charles Dickens character, aren't you? Fuck it, take the husband. This one's gotta stay.
- Yusuf: This vault has a four-turn tumbler system, which means it has over a hundred million possible combinations. You can't just crack it open like it's a piggy bank I gave Kamala to instill in her the value of saving!
- Matt: Did it work?
- Yusuf: Did what work?
- Matt: The lesson. The value of saving.
- Yusuf: Oh... I don't know. I guess we just try to impart what we know to the next generation. Protect them from what they can't see.
- [Matt opens the vault.]
- Yusuf: Exactly what kind of a lawyer are you?
- Matt: A really good one.
- Devlin: Oi. I confess, I'm disappointed, Detective. You recognize the accent, but you don't seem to know jack shite about the significance of Saint Paddy's Day... for a Protestant, do ya?
- Kim: I must've missed that chapter, Mr. James. Care to catch me up?
- Devlin: Just another Wednesday, love. Or, as they say in this dear city of yours, Christmas for a Jew.
Excessive Force [1.06]
edit- Heather: I think it's a fascinating question: What about a mask? Does it hide us and give us permission to do things that are legally and socially taboo, like violence? I mean, does a mask allow us to be our true selves, or does it strip away our identity and allow us to act like animals?
- Matt: Hm, yeah. I don't know -- maybe both.
- Angela: Mr. Murdock, Attorney At Law. Big fancy office, here to help the little guy, right? Only on your terms. 'Cause when the little guy puts something for real in your hands, you're all "nah". That's fine. That's cool. My bad for thinking you cared.
- Matt: It's not that simple, Angela. That's not how this works.
- Angela: You know what? My Uncle, two days before he got shot, you know what he told me? He told me "Don't rely on anyone to do what you can do for yourself." Damn. He was right.
- Fisk: You know, politics, it's… It's a different type of problem-solving. Most of it is new to me but some things, they remain unchanged. Find what a person wants and either withhold it or provide it, and they'll do anything.
- Vanessa: Not tonight. You're asking New York's elite for money. Sure, they want influence, but they don't need it; it's like selling a busker to a billionaire. It's all just ego and vanity. By simply being there and asking them for money, you're giving them all they care about: reassurance of their supremacy.
- Billionaire: You may have a seat at the table right now -- for a couple of years, anyway. But the people in this room still decide who gets to eat. I suggest you don't lose sight of that.
- Matt: Fuck it.
- Fisk: I can imagine that Vanessa would like for me to let you go.
- Adam: Thank you... Thank you!
- Fisk: But that's a difficult thing for me to do. You understand that, right? How we are... locked together. Our experience, shared. And when I was younger, smaller… I went up against men three times my size. Now, men who knew how to use their hands, they did so, often. And I learned that a simple tool, it can be a great equalizer.
- Angela: Daredevil?
- Daredevil: It's okay, I'm here. Yeah. I'm here.
Art for Art's Sake [1.07]
edit- Matt: Okay, Heather, you realize I used to have this whole other life... And it was a lot different to this.
- Heather: At your old firm, with your old friends. Foggy and... Karen.
- Matt: Kinda. Y'know and sometimes, this-- This all feels... To- To me, it feels like... fake.
- Heather: Fake?
- Matt: Not- Not you.
- Heather: Yeah. I'm sorry to do this, but you have been tamping down trauma for so long, you can't even see when it's bubbling up inside of you and threatens to ruin everything good you have.
- Matt: I know. I know.
- Heather: Everything good we have.
- Matt: Yeah. And I'm trying really hard to fight it.
- Heather: It's not a fight. It's a process.
- Fisk: When I brought you over from your previous life, can you recall why I said I hired you?
- Buck: I believe you called it my ability to think... asymmetrically.
- Bastian: I mean, all I ever wanted to be was an artist -- to be the person I am now, and... That's all thanks to you.
- Heather: That is kind of you to say, but I'm just the conduit.
- Bastian: No, you're the key. Don't you see that? I mean, you've unlocked something in me, Dr. Glenn, something I didn't know was missing! You've allowed my creativity to flourish, to soar to heights I never even imagined!
- Heather: So, um... Let's talk about homework--
- Bastian: No, you're not listening to me, Dr. Glenn! This city is finally starting to see me for who I really am.
- Heather: Does that mean you've been displaying your art?
- [Bastian's nose begins bleeding.]
- Bastian: You could say that.
- Kirsten: We're a team here. And hiding things from one another isn't gonna get us anywhere. I trust you and I trust Matt. Be nice if that was a two-way street.
- Fisk: [To his Anti-Vigilante Task Force] You are the thin, dark line protecting this city. Remind them of that!
- Daniel: You're not stupid, BB. You see, this here? This is a carrot-and-a-stick situation, with a very big carrot and a very big stick.
- BB: Are you actually threatening me?
- Daniel: No! No. I'm presenting you with an opportunity -- a great one, with a great man. And what you decide in the next few seconds will determine how totally awesome or totally shitty the rest of your life is. And I'd be so stoked if you made the right call! You know?
Isle of Joy [1.08]
edit- Officer: All these new terms... We used to just call it "Cops, Snitches, and Psychos". Which one are you, Poindexter?
- Matt: I'm not so sure you can put Muse and Daredevil in the same category.
- Heather: Not so sure that you can't. They're just these underdeveloped boys hiding behind masks, trying to make it look like something more sophisticated.
- Matt: That's a pretty dark view; I mean, think they're completely different animals.
- Heather: You weren't there, Matt.
- Matt: No, I'm just saying that... that Muse tried to kill you, Daredevil saved you.
- Heather: I saved me. They were both out there for themselves.
- Fisk: I'm better than I was. I am. I am... And i-if I cannot be with you, Vanessa, I cannot be.
- Matt: Y'know, we-- put Poindexter away and it changes nothing, alright? We defend Hector Ayala and he's still murdered, probably by the same cops who are out there assaulting citizens, by the way, alright? Leroy Bradford goes away for eating a box of caramel corn. Heather's assaulted by Muse and she thinks Fisk is right. And now this asshole, this privileged sociopath can get away with ripping off teachers! We're not serving justice here, you know? We're babysitting chaos. This, us, what we do, it feels useless.
- Kirsten: I get it. I really get it. It's all a lot. You... You've been through a lot. But this can't happen like this.
- Poindexter: You hear that? Outside? That is the roar of the jungle, counselor. Is that what I am to you? An animal? One of them? 'Cause that's what this is all about, right? Who is the predator and who is the prey?
- Reporter: Look, I know my rights!
- Powell: Oh, yeah? Pretty good. Me, too. Let me read 'em to you. You have the right... to have a real hard time... wiping your own ass for the rest of your life.
- Heather: What are you gonna do? Confront the mayor at his own party?
- Matt: Maybe.
- Heather: That's acting out, Matt.
- Matt: And mental health is knowing when and where to do it.
- Fisk: You know, it's been said that keeping secrets can make us sick.
Straight to Hell [1.09]
edit- Fisk: In business, there's always a tipping point in a negotiation. We are in that place with this city. It just needs a little push... and they'll come to us with open arms.
- Frank: Hey, Red?
- Matt: Yeah.
- Frank: Why would you take a bullet for that asshole?
- Matt: That's a good question.
- Cole North: Do what you gotta do. I stood with my own. I can die easy.
- Powell: It's an honor to meet you, Castle. I'm a big admirer of your work.
- Frank: Jesus Christ…
- Powell: And I lost a lot of guys 'cause of you today. And I'm hoping that this is fuckin' worth it. Listen, Frank, everything that you do, you know, you can do that with us, and you don't gotta run anymore. These guys fuckin' idolize you, man. We all do. It'd be an honor to serve with you, Frank.
- Frank: "Admire me", huh?
- Powell: Yeah.
- Frank: Yeah. Hey... Out of your fuckin' mind, you know that? You're a bunch of clowns, you know that? You fuckin' clowns. Admire me. You think you know my pain? You think you know my loss? You admire me? What do you know about me? How I see the world? You know how I see the world? It's just a circus. A bunch of clowns. I ain't gonna serve with you. I won't fuckin' piss on you if you were on fire, you got that?
- Karen: I'm right there with you, okay? I feel lost, I feel angry, I feel fucking helpless. The whole city is there. Do you remember I once asked you what it was like... living in the darkness? Do you remember what you said?
- Daredevil: It's not dark. It's like a thousand suns.
- Matt: You know, when I was a kid, after the accident, I thought God had taken my sight. When I grew up... I came to believe that in exchange, He'd given me a special destiny... Like a mask and a purpose could save my life.
- Karen: Didn't it?
- Matt: No. It wasn't the mask. It wasn't me needing to believe in it that saved me. My mistake was thinking I was immune to the darkness. And I let it creep inside me. I let the dark power me. I threw Poindexter off that rooftop. Karen, I wanted to kill him. The truth is, ever since Foggy died... I didn't know who I was anymore.
- Karen: Foggy believed in you. Whatever you wanna call yourself. Whatever's... behind the mask, behind your eyes... that's wrath, and that's mercy. That's the dark and the light. He knew all of it. All of it. He knew you. I do, too.
- Matt: I can't see my city. But I can feel it. The system isn't working. And it's rotten. Corrupt. But this is our city. Not his. And we can take it back, together. The weak... The strong... All of us... Resist. Rebel. Rebuild. Because we are the city. Without fear.
