Wikiquote talk:Image use policy/Archive 1

Why do we have any images being uploaded to Wikiquote? Offhand, I can't think of any ordinary image that would be appropriate for Wikiquote that wouldn't be at least as appropriate for Wikipedia, so they should all be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons instead. Perhaps we should disable image uploading here? — Jeff Q (talk) 00:30, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

A proposal worthy to consider. French Wikipedia allows its editors to upload images copyrighted and never used on encyclopediac artices (and most of such images will decorate their user pages or talks). Unless we have a similar policy and have our own facebook, and unless we don't use fair use image, I think Jeff Q's idea "upload disabled" is very reasonable. Some projects which don't allow Fair Use images, like French Wikinews, make upload function disabled for your information. --Aphaia 01:43, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)
... move the interesting discussion here about fair use and disabling uploads to a policy page or the Village Pump. Rmhermen 14:02, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I'm strongly in favor of only allowing Wikimedia Commons images. There're plenty of free images that we can use, so there's no need to offer the possibility for potential problems and ambiguous situations due to fair use images. It should be best to derive our policy from wikimedia commons. We should update Wikiquote:Image use policy. I propose that we delete all the images that were already uploaded, and disable image uploading to wikiquote (as JeffQ suggested). iddo999 4 July 2005 11:11 (UTC)
It might be a good idea to disable the uploads. I don't know if deleting all the existing images is necessary, but any with potential copyright problems should be removed. ~ Kalki 22:19, 21 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

OK, deleting images and replacing them with commons images might be something that would be done over time, if editors here decide that it's a good idea. But anyway, that's less relevant for this discussion. I now asked on IRC on #wikimedia, and brion told me that if we want to disable uploads, then we can ask for it on #wikimedia and they will change the configuration on the server. So far it seems that all admins here think that of it in a positive way, but perhaps not sure? The reasons for disabling images are imho:

  1. the current policy of commons is good for wikiquote, because we don't need to mess with fair use images anyway
  2. better to derive the images policy from commons in general, because they know what they're doing better than us with regard to images
  3. better to use only one image instead of duplicating the same image for each wikimedia project that it is used
  4. there's a side benefit that spam vandals couldn't upload images in here

So, should I ask on IRC on #wikimedia that they'll disable uploads? Everyone agrees? Anyone objects? iddo999 20:39, 22 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Yep. No more pictures :) ~ MosheZadka (Talk) 06:19, 26 July 2005 (UTC)Reply
I support this idea, but we need to be aware it is currently possible for Commons people to delete images we share without noticing we use it. This is due to their checking tool which cares only for big project with over 10K articles. I found some images we use were deleted without alert. It could be fixed, but it might be wiser to wait for the time they begin to check all project (it will be possible in coming soon, a Commons sysop said thanks to new servers introduced in this summer) . --Aphaia 14:35, 26 July 2005 (UTC)Reply
Add my support for disabling image uploads. Altogether images are more trouble than they are worth, especially considering that Wikicommons has a growing collection we can easily use. I hope they start checking soon if we are using them though. Rmhermen 19:24, 2 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
There seems to be wide-spread support for disabling image uploading, if not for mass-image-deletion. Iddo, are you going to ask developers about disabling such? Thanks ~ MosheZadka (Talk) 05:28, 7 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

I am counting Aphaia, Kalki, Rmhermen, Jeff, Iddo and me in favour of disabling image uploads, and none object. The discussion has been here a while, in WQ:VP longer and Iddo even pointed again on VP to this discussion. If there are no objections, I'll ask extremely soon that all uploads be disabled (then we can look over the pictures and decide which ones we should delete). ~ MosheZadka (Talk) 18:44, 8 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

As warned, I went and asked Kate to disable image uploads, and she kindly did. No more image uploads! I will soon go through the list of images and try to have a mass-deletion of stuff we don't need. To answer Jeff's question, I asked a commons admin on IRC about user images, and though he was disappointed to hear I'm not a "hot girl", he assured me user pictures are allowed on commons. ~ MosheZadka (Talk) 05:30, 10 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much, MosheZadka. I recommend to our editors to try and use many wikimedia-commons images wherever they see fit, because having (proper) images in the articles in nice, and also in order to see whether Aphaia's concern is still relevant. iddo999 06:28, 10 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
To anyone interested in this issue: there's a discussion on commons on such issues. I have attempted to represent wikiquote fairly there, but please join the discussion if you have anything to contribute. Thanks ~ MosheZadka (Talk) 06:57, 10 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

From main page edit

I've moved (old) policy discussion here from the main page.

This is just a starter comment for this page, but if possible, it is desirable to upload all GFDL and public domain images to the Wikimedia Commons project where images can be accessed from all Wikimedia projects, rather than uploading images to individual projects. This helps to minimize needless redundancy. Uploading of copyrighted images under fair use provisions on any of the Wikimedia projects is discouraged. ~ Kalki 21:35, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Agreed. I would like to add
  • Commons accepts not only GFDL and PD but also other free licence like cc-by-sa.
  • But mainly for community issue we could accept some copyrighted and/or images or any other data for personal use (e.g. images for Facebook). French Wikipedia has a tag for "images only for personal use (hence not encyclopediac)."
by the way how do you think we would add images appropriate to articles like a portrait of authors, theme related images (specially for articles on Themes or Places)? --Aphaia 06:28, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)
