Search page links

On the search page, there are two Google links (I assume, like Wikipedia, you meant to have Google and Yahoo?). In addition, the first one has "$1" in the text box instead of the user-specified text.

Login cookie problems

Greetings!

I'm having a hard time logging in at quote.wikipedia.org. There seems to be something wrong with the cookies sent by the site. I keep getting this error message:

Wikiquote uses cookies to log in users. You have cookies disabled. Please enable them and try again.

I have enabled cookies and been able to log in at wiktionary.org and en.wikipedia.org without any problems.

The bug occurs at least with Mozilla 1.5 and IE 6.0 (both on Windows 2000). When I tested the site with w3m, there were warnings about bad cookies. This does not happen with wiktionary.org or en.wikipedia.org.

Same here. Using Mozilla 1.5.

It seems to work when logging in at http://www.wikiquote.org instead of http://quote.wikipedia.org -- T42 19:33, 5 Dec 2003 (UTC)

At present any act of editing seems to place me back into "quote.wikipedia.org" where I do not appear to be logged in rather than "wikiquote.org" where I do remain logged in. This bug has existed to some degree even before the recent server problems, but now seems a constant thing —at least for me. Kalki 15:02, 2 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Likewise, both Mozilla Firebird 0.7 and IE6 on Win2k3 and XP. There are some edits by me atributed to my IP because of this happening. Probably the easiest way to spot being logged on/off is to have your User skin set to Cologne (or anything but default, really). Without looking at the PHP code, it does seem to be something very simple like a define(URL_PREFIX, "quote.wikipedia.org"); that's the prefix for all internal URLs hasn't been changed. Get this when logging into quote.wikipedia.org (wikiquote.org doesn't have the problem):

"The server tried to set an illegal cookie. The combination of the server's hostname and the domain attribute for this cookie is not accetpable, and the cookie has therefor been rejected".

Apparently this:

quotewikiSession=81834ae4168a83c2705eec57cbbeaa86; path=/; domain=.wikiquote.org

is the problem (this a part of the cookie? -- never written one so I don't know). Perhaps one can send different cookies depending on the hostname? I'm using Opera 7. Rendering Bug

In looking at the page for Groundhog Day, the text looks like this when originally shown:

"I make the weather."

The rest of the page is ok.

But when I attempt to edit the page, it appears as this:

I would really like to know how the word weather gets turned into a link to cookies. This appears to be a bug.

Same Problem occurs in exactly the same way even if I'm logged in, the word weather changes into the link cookies on the entry for Groundhog Day. (Thanks for the trick about using www.wikiquote.org rather than going through quote.wikipedia.org). And by changing the link to www.wikiquote.org on this page when editing from quote.wikipedia.org, the system shows I'm logged in here on this page. Paul --Rfc1394 01:59, 1 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Help!

I was registering as a new user here 'Ankur'. I went to the login page and filed in the name 'Ankur' for user name, but did not give a password or email id. Guess what? The user 'Ankur' was created and now I can not login using that username since no password exists!!! The error reported is that of cookie problem. Just to check if it really happened that way I created another user 'Help!' again without password or emailid. 'Help!' too exists now (All user names without quotes.) Anyone wiht the ability to, kindly fix this bug and delete both the users so I can create a valid account by the name Ankur. For the sake of information I am using Opera 7.21 on Windows 2000 machine. If things workout will you also be kind enough to let me know on my wikipedia.org user page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Ankur

Hi,

I created the user account with the name 'Murthy'. Success message came saying account created and showed me an internal number. After sometime when i tried login it said 'Murthy' doesn't exist. So, i did the regn. again. Now i hit the same error. Please help.

There have been a lot of log-in related problems for some time here. I am not one of the programmers so I do not know all the issues involved. Currently I have problems in staying logged in if I use "Wikiquote.org" to log in so I have been using the "quote.wikipedia.org" option to log in. You might try clicking on the link I provided, and logging in as Murthy that way to see if that helps. ~ Kalki 17:42, 20 May 2004 (UTC)

As you can probably see, there has been a radical change to the interface. The above tip may no longer apply, if it previously did. Try logging in at Wikiquote.org and hopefully whatever problems you had been encountering will be gone; my own previous problems are. ~ Kalki 18:59, 22 May 2004 (UTC)

Apostrophes in titles

There seems to be a bug with apostrophes and perhaps the "&" symbol in the names of pages, or links to pages. Yesterday Eclecticology tried to update a link to a page at Wikisource from Franklin Roosevelt's First Inaugural Address, but the apostrophe in the title of the page he was linking to seemed to prevent it, and today I tried to move a page with a mispelling: (Wanyes World 1&2) to one with an apostrophe (Wayne's World) and recieved a message that "This action cannot be performed on this page." I am assuming it might be because of the apostrophe, or because of the "&" sign in the current title… which also seems to be messing up how it registered, with the move page reporting it as "Wanyes World 1" rather than "Wanyes World 1&2" ~ Kalki 16:32, 27 May 2004 (UTC)

Excessive line spacing

As I've complained heartily about in the Wikiquote:Village pump, the new Wikiquote software and its formatting style royally screws up line spacing, rendering no discernible difference between text lines separated by a blank line and those not separated so. This is an important formatting element that is widely used in all of Wikidom. It's outrageous to break this without offering a fix or an alternative way of formatting to provide this distinction! Could the sysops please acknowledge this problem and address it? -- Jeff Q 04:24, 29 May 2004 (UTC)

In the absence of even an acknowledgement of this problem from the Wikiquote admins, I have discovered a workaround. Click on my preferences, then Skin, then choose Standard. (Even though no setting is shown initially, the new default style is MonoBook.) "Standard" was apparently the old default until the new software was installed. It's not as pretty (or as cutesy) as MonoBook, but it also doesn't pointlessly break a bunch of visual elements in the middle of a major software test. It also makes links clearly visible again without the use of that (admittedly nifty) arrow icon. -- Jeff Q 14:13, 31 May 2004 (UTC)

Login problems

As Kalki recently pointed out, there are serious, ongoing login problems. These problem do not appear to have been addressed at all in the half year since they were first mentioned. I've noticed on many occasions in the past few weeks (both before and after the major style change) that clicking on Show Preview or Save Page while editing an article will often return a page that doesn't recognize that I'm logged in. (In fact, midway through refining this posting, I found myself logged out again and had to start over!) If I have multiple windows open, the ones still logged in will continue to be logged in when the same links are clicked. I haven't seen any pattern to the sudden loss of login.

I have been using "quote.wikipedia.org" exclusively until now, and I see that others have experienced this problem using that sitename. I cannot use "wikiquote.org", as has been suggested, because that site has a bug in its cookie detection that completely prevents me from logging in. I have no problems logging into "quote.wikipedia.org" (just in staying logged in) or with Wikipedia. Could the sysops do something about these problems, please?! -- Jeff Q 04:41, 29 May 2004 (UTC)

Immediately after posting this comment, I found myself logged out again. I clicked on my browser bookmark for my watchlist and found myself logged in again. Since there is no ID content in the bookmark, it would seem that the problem is that the server is simply failing to retrieve the cookie sporadically. I'm no expert, but I can't help wondering if this is yet another performance problem. Maybe the overloaded systems are just failing to send out or pick up necessary HTTP transactions. -- Jeff Q 04:51, 29 May 2004 (UTC)

The last FIVE consecutive edits I made ALL returned with me being logged out again. This happened during a period where server response was so slow that not only did it take as much as 4.5 minutes to return a page, but I could actually watch the individual helper icons above the edit window pop up every second or two. QOTD Template

Edits to the Template:Qotd are not displaying even in the template page, even though they are being retained when I go to edit them again, and thus are not showing up on the main page either. ~ Kalki 11:52, 4 Jun 2004 (UTC)

User watchlist count wrong

With the update to MediaWiki 1.5beta1, not only is the Special:Watchlist error that shows 120,000 edits per period (bug 1778) still unfixed, but the user watchlist count is now including talk pages in the count while still saying "not counting talk pages". (I'll give them credit for adding the comma to "120,000"; it makes the wildly-inaccurate number easier to read. ☺) — Jeff Q (talk) 27 June 2005 00:08 (UTC)

Well, they haven't fixed the 120,000 bug yet, but I see the watchlist numbers are back to normal. Maybe it was a database query problem that went away after things got back to normal after the update? — Jeff Q (talk) 28 June 2005 09:19 (UTC)

I don't know the reason but yesterday Brion and I agreed to the feature "all edits in a certain term" was annoying (Brion criticized it "stupid") ... Domas Mitsuzas fixed it willingly within a minute. But after that, recently I found two VfD entries on my WL. Does anyone have same trouble still now? --Aphaia 28 June 2005 09:29 (UTC)

I'm still seeing the following on my watchlist page:

297 pages watched not counting talk pages, 120,000 total pages edited in the specified period

The watched count seems accurate now; the "pages edited" is still wildly (and apparently universally) wrong. I'm not sure what you mean about VfD entries on your watchlist; I've always seen those left over after deletions of pages I was watching. Account creation

Here's an easy fix: on the Special:Userlogin page, remind newcomers that they must capitalize the first letter of their user name when creating an account. Alternatively, upcase it for them. Currently, all it says when you try to create a new account with an all-lowercase user name is You have not specified a valid user name. -- Brandon 28 June 2005 08:06 (UTC)

Arrows misrendered on diff pages

I just noticed today that the left and right arrows directing to previous and next diffs on diff pages are being rendered not as "←" and "→", but as "←" and "→" (with the ampersand in "&" form in the page source). This problem seems to be restricted to diff pages, as the arrows show up fine here and in Transwiki, which makes heavy use of the right arrow. Did we just update Wikiquote software or change a setting in the past 2-3 days? ~ Jeff Q (talk) 03:32, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

Some MediaWiki templates need fix up

Some of the Mediawiki Template, the one listed at Special:Allmessages, need to fix up, by an administrator. There should be no html tag in this template, but just use wiki sysntax.
