User subpages edit

Based on your user page links, I deduced that the page "\References" that you created was meant to be a user subpage instead of a Wikiquote article. I moved the article to User:CORNELIUSSEON/References, which is the correct structure and syntax for a user subpage. (See Wikiquote:User page for more information.) I also hope that you do not mind that I took the liberty of changing the links on your user page to use this syntax. (Ordinarily it is a Bad Idea to edit someone else's main user page without permission, but I hope that you will find my changes more useful than a description of how to fix the links.) Notice that the links look the same when displayed on your user page but refer to different pages. This is done by using "link labels", which are text to be displayed that is different from the link. The labels are separated from the link by a pipe (|) character, and in this case show only the subpage part. (I apologize if you knew all of this already and just made a mistake.) Let me know if you have any questions or problems. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 23:29, 19 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Actually, thanks. What worries me is that instead of the various Wikimedia projects converging to a common set of rules and tools, they are diverging more and more each day. This makes them harder and harder to use because you have to remember different solutions for identical problems. Over on Wikipedia, \reference works just fine when buried on the User page. Likewise on other Wikimedia pages.

I hadn't realized this. I suspect there is a MediaWiki setting that must be changed from its default to allow this to work. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any official forum that propagates these useful tidbits of configuration information among the Wikimedia projects. (I know there are many unofficial ones, but there are so many in different media [e.g., IRC, maillists, discussion boards, wikis about wikis] that one needs to be quite devoted to Wikimedia culture — not just the work — to have time to keep up on all these things, and I'd rather spend my time doing the work. ) This might be worth bringing up on the village pump. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 18:00, 8 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
