The Quotations Page’s Quotes of the Day attributes "For most of history, Anonymous was a woman." to her, can someone confirm and source that? (The spam filter won’t let me link to www dot quotationpage dot com slash quote slash 26222 dot html.) 178.203.155.45 23:47, 16 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

It’s unbelievable how often this quotation is repeated without a verifiable source. I found one, though, Viriginia Woolf: A Room of One’s Own London, 1977 [1929], p. 48. Can somebody please confirm that? 178.203.155.45 00:06, 17 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Oh, there already is this:
  • I would venture to guess than Anon, who wrote so many poems without signing them, was often a woman.
    • Ch. 3 (p. 51)
So where does that shorter, popular version come from? Should there be a note that this is often misquoted (if in fact it is)? 178.203.155.45 00:09, 17 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
It would be interesting to track down the origin, but it's not necessarily relevant. Misquotation is very common. It might also be a different version of the same text, as it's based on a series of lectures and AFAIK combines some previous thoughts or writings fo hers. --Nemo 15:00, 14 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
