This article falls within a proposed limits on quotations policy.

The subject of this article is a television show, and as a result, the proposal would set a limitation of one quote for less than 30 minutes, two quotes for 30 minute shows, and five quotes for 60 minute shows (see our TV policy for shows of other lengths).

If you would like to add another quote to the page, you should consider whether to remove one that is already there in order to keep within the bounds of fair use of copyright material.
For reference, the length of this work is: 60 min.

I'm just making it a bit more organized, with episode quotes instead of just random quotes. Perhaps later, I'll add a section or page about character quotes. --66.177.127.7 05:52, 20 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Serious Format edit

The way it stands now, it looks insanely cluttered and is quite threadbare. Anyone out there willing to try to set something in stone for it? 65.145.213.85 08:03, 10 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've done a lot of reformatting (see Major fixing and reformatting below), but one thing I couldn't adequately do is sort these quotes in chronological order during each episode. I know a few of them at least are in practically random order. I ask editors who are watching the episodes anew to rearrange the existing quotes as they can. Thanks. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 12:42, 4 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Major fixing and reformatting edit

I ran across this article, just intending to add a quote to one episode, and discovered that someone decided to create a custom table of contents for what is practically a stub article by the standards of many Wikiquote TV show articles. This is a bad idea for several reasons:

  • Custom TOCs require considerable maintenance if their shows are still being produced. The standard TOC automatically adjusts whenever a new episode is added; custom TOCs are static. Therefore, they are best not used until a show ends its run, like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Mystery Science Theater 3000.
  • Wikiquote:Templates/TV shows calls for episode numbers precisely because it allows editors to easily sort by episode. Without those numbers, there's no way to tell what order the episodes should be in. (I had to reverse an entire season for this show.) Custom TOCs get around this, but only because somebody has taken the time to verify the order of all episodes and lock them down in the TOC. This was not done here.
  • Custom TOC links are manually created, so the creator is certain to make mistakes and create broken links. Whenever an editor creates a link (wiki or URL), they should always, always test it before saving. A custom TOC creator is required to test over 100 links before saving. Again, this was not done.
  • When a custom TOC is not implemented correctly, people with quotes to add will click on the broken links and fail to jump to the episode title. This discourages them from adding their quotes. This may be one reason why this article is still so sparsely populated.

I was sorely tempted to undo the custom TOC, but apparently I suffered a momentary bout of insanity, because I instead filled out the table through Season 5 (which hasn't even completely aired yet), added the missing headings (including Unknown episode, See also, and External links), fixed all the broken links (some of which confirmed this table was copied from Buffy, as Smallville doesn't have episodes called "The Gift" or "Grave" (yet)), and most importantly, tested every single link. (I also reformatted all the quotes in line with current standards while I was at it.) I hope this will help everyone to add more quotes from this excellent show. And future custom-TOC creators, please heed my advice! ~ Jeff Q (talk) 12:35, 4 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Recent quote additions edit

Hello there. I've recently added a fair amount of quotes to seasons 1-4, however, after looking through some other Wikiquote pages I've noticed some significant differences. For instance, I haven't been linking the characters to their wikipedia pages, and it looks like I add much longer dialog then other shows. I do feel like I can justify both though, since the character pages at Wikipedia are mainly for the comic book characters and Smallville just doesn't have the one-liners like Seinfeld, Friends, ect. I've also added the quotes in chunks, by the seasons. It looks like a lot of people add quotes by the individual episode, which seems a bit tedious to me. Anyhow, I would appreciate it if someone with more experience would let me know if what I've done is incorrect. Since I've made this mess I'm more then willing to clean it up. (I'm not even sure if this the appropriate place to ask, sorry) Thanks! ~ Nikki 19:27, 7 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Without bothering to examine your specific edits, allow me to make a few comments:
  • Don't worry overmuch about linking characters. If Smallville doesn't have character pages in Wikipedia, or if the Superman-genre character pages mislead, we may be better off without them for now. (I'm sure it will come up in the future, but the nice thing about wikis is that you don't have to solve every problem right away.)
  • Dialog is perfectly acceptable, but it shouldn't get to the point where entire scenes are quoted. Wikiquote-worthy quotes are typically centered around either a funny or dramatic set of lines (occasionally requiring some context) or an important excerpt of a scene. Anything more could cause problems with copyright. (This is a point of contention within the WikiMedia projects as well as the larger world, so it's a good idea to trim to the essence.)
  • The rationale for episode-based quotes is that Wikiquote, as a WikiMedia project, focuses on sourced, verifiable quotes, unlike nearly every other quote website. The way we currently approach this with TV shows is to work to place each quote in an episode, so editors need only sift through a single show to verify the quote.
I hope this provides some context for the current practices. Thanks for asking, and for your contributions! ~ Jeff Q (talk) 19:46, 7 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Not Vandalism edit

I'm so sorry! While I was saving quotes I added to 'Vessel', somehow everything from 'Run' down was deleted. This has never happened to me before. I just wanted to apologize and say that this was an accident, and not vandalism.

Too many quotes edit

While I know it may be difficult to limit the number of quotes per episode for this show, it certainly appears that we have way too much here to escape possible copyright issues (especially in some of the later episodes). We really need to trim the number of quotes per episode to single digits at least. This page is now one of the largest on Wikiquote and serious attention to this is needed. ~ UDScott 21:01, 1 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm making large-scale deletes of what must surely be copyvios, not to mention not quotable.--Cato 20:57, 24 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
I've begun trimming the page - I have completed Season 1, trimming it down to 5 quotes per episode. ~ UDScott 17:24, 26 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Good stuff. I started but I never finished.--Cato 22:56, 26 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I figured this was long overdue - and the page is now the largest one here! ~ UDScott 15:49, 27 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I've trimmed Season 2 down to 5 quotes per episode now too. ~ UDScott 18:29, 27 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Season 3 is done. ~ UDScott 16:12, 1 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Season 4 is done. ~ UDScott 16:44, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Seasons 5-7 are done now too. I will remove the checkcopyright tag for now, but will also keep an eye on the page. ~ UDScott 19:15, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Deleting Seasons 10-11 and Removing All of My Quotes edit

I've been working very hard at adding quotes and editing all of the episodes. I've also recently added Smallville Seasons 10-11 episodes. Now, while I know Season 11 is a comic book, it does take place within the continuity and is a valid continuation of the series and should be included within this page. I've worked with adding quotes and cleaning up and find it very irritating and frustrating that someone has erased all of my progress over the past 4 months and would like to keep this page as it was before as it was a very informative page that contained many quotes for fans of the series to enjoy and have enjoyed working on this page and would like to continue working on this page uninterrupted!!

Adding the season 10 and 11 quotes is fine, but within the limitations we have set for such a page. The quotes from other seasons were very much in excess of these limitations and this is why they were removed. Yes, you worked hard to add them, but others had worked just as hard to edit this page down to a state where there were at most 5 quotes per episode. If you would like to add additional quotes, you will need to remove quotes to maintain that limit. Thanks. ~ UDScott (talk) 16:14, 15 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
After discussion about the limits on the number of quotes with a particular user, the protection of this page was lifted after it appeared that there was a better understanding of the issue. Immediately, the excess of quotes was reinstated. I reverted this, but if this continues, the protection will again be placed on this page. ~ UDScott (talk) 18:14, 15 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
