On The USA-PATRIOT Act edit

  • I voted against it (the USA Patriot Act) because certain provisions of the Act represent a very dangerous infringement on our civil liberties.
  • I would have loved to have voted for it, but my view of my job is to do what I think is right, not to be cowed by the name of the bill.
    • On being the only Senator to vote against USA-PATRIOT Act.

On Washington edit

  • I didn’t come to Washington to make friends. That’s not where my friends are.
  • If the history of wartime politics teaches us anything, it is that measures that seem just, or at least permissible, in a time of conflict, can have damaging and lasting repercussions.
  • What is the harm of doing the right thing? What is the harm of doing our job as legislators and making sure we do not stick the entire bankruptcy community with these provisions that do not make any sense?
    • On the recent Bankruptcy Bill.
  • So I'm always going to be someone people think they can knock off, using words like patriotism or whatever. But I don't think it's that easy, because I'm straight with people. I don't say one thing in one town and another thing in another.

On The Death Penalty edit

  • We cannot allow the spectacle of constant executions to be swept under the rug. We know that already over 100 individuals who were put on death row have been released. And we should shudder to think how many people have been sent to their deaths that were innocent.

On Healthcare edit

  • Health care for all Americans is the most pressing domestic issue today. It's far past time for the President and Congress to deliver health care to everyone.

On The Environment edit

  • We should not use special budget procedures to jam through legislation to drill in the Arctic Refuge. This topic is too important to the public to address it in such a back-door manner. We should be having a full, open discussion of the issue during an energy debate.

On The Internet edit

  • I sincerely think this is going to transform politics. It's almost a miracle...
    • On the Blogosphere.
