Adore or Adorn edit

I found that in the third edition of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, published 1796, her most famous quote is rendered as: "Taught from their infancy that beauty is woman's sceptre, the mind shapes itself to the body, and, roaming round its gilt cage, only seeks to adore its prison." Whereas, a copy from 1833, prints it as we've come to know it, with the word "adore" replaced by "adorn." Was this a printing mistake in 1796 or creative editing after her death?
