Men are always like animals once you get there food they will leave you alone.

Cet animal est très méchant edit

"Cet animal est très méchant / Quand on l'attaque il se défend" ("This animal is very mean / when someone attacks it, it defends itself"). The quotation is evidently from a song called "La Ménagerie" by someone called Théodore P. K. who is otherwise unknown (some sources give his name as P. K. Théodore). It was written in 1828 according to the most reliable sources (but some say 1868). The singer takes the voice of a carnival barker encouraging potential customers to pay two sols or sous (10 centimes or a tenth of a franc) to see the various animals. In context, "this animal" is obviously a reference to a leopard. More verses of the song can be read here: https://www.google.com/books/edition/Phras%C3%A9ologie_fran%C3%A7aise/C3Q5AQAAIAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=voici+lheure,c%C3%A9s+le+moment+entrez+tous+ici+dedans.+%C3%A7a+ncoutque+deux+sols+par+t%C3%AAte&pg=PA453&printsec=frontcover on p. 453. The song may have been a parody of a line from an earlier work about historical voyages published in 1826 which says, regarding a voyage of Vasco da Gama, "Ces animaux sont si furieux, qu'ils se défendent contre ceux qui les attaquent" ("These animals are so furious that they defend themselves against those who attack them.") These animals are called "loups-marins" in the original, probably a reference to walruses. More on this theory at https://www.guichetdusavoir.org/question/voir/14316

A slightly different wording is attributed to "H. D'Audigier" in Grand Dictionnaire Universel du XIXe Siècle volume I (1866), p. 392 ( https://www.google.com/books/edition/Grand_dictionnaire_universel_du_XIXe_si/rlG_2zvaFncC?hl=en&gbpv=1&bsq=m%C3%A9chant ): "Cet animal est fort méchant: / Quand on l'attaque, il se défend". I have no further information on H. D'Audigier. 69.161.125.36 15:22, 17 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
