This famous bronze memorial by the artist Scott Sutherland was unveiled in 1952 by HM Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, in tribute to the men who trained at Achnacarry during the Second World War. They would ultimately become the most elite of fighting men - the Army Commandos. The toughness of the Commando training here was legendary, and included such delights as an 18 mile run up Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis, and that was just one aspect of a single day's training. Opposed landings using live ammunition was another activity carried out during amphibious assault training on Loch Lochy, as was the crossing of the River Arkaig in flood via various devices including the Death Slide and Toggle Bridge. Commandos were required to be skilled in the handling of all types of captured foreign weapons as well as their own, and become expert in unarmed combat, and survival in the atrocious climate of the mountains in Lochaber.

Thoroughly recommended is the Commando Exhibition at the Spean Bridge Hotel, Spean Bridge (free - through the hotel entrance and turn right) which contains all manner of memorabilia, documents, artifacts and photographs devoted to the men who trained here as commandos during WWII.
