DescriptionNeil Gaiman (2005).jpg
Neil Gaiman taking questions after reading a chapter from Anansi Boys, on book tour in Berkeley, Sep 30, 2005.
We learned:
- Went to google before coming here (cf. Terry Pratchett, who did the same thing. Does google have some sort of literary booking agent?) Home-made "Neil #1" plaque from google for being the first hit for "Neil".
- Interviewed by Michael Chabon yesterday.
- He's started writing in pen. Because it's not as real as on the computer. Used to be that the computer was not real compared to a typewriter, but that's worn off.
- Often starts book elsewhere, finishes them at home
- Used to be a journalist. There's writer's block, but there's no journalist's block. (Again, like Pratchett.)
- Why President Taft? (A detail from Anansi Boys.) Because all people remember about him that he's fat. Read pornographic biography of Taft in a roommate's copy of National Lampoon.
- McKean made MirrorMask using animators fresh out of school and giving them more responsibility than they'd normally get. Didn't originally planned for it to be this big; but people at Sundance liked it. Go see it to make momentum.
- As a teenager, wanted to be a science fiction writer, the next Larry Niven
- No plans for Good Omens II. By now, he and Pratchett are so famous that big business interests would be involved.
- Plan for Neverwhere sequel called "Seven Sisters". Sequels are okay, but prefers to do new things.
- Anansi Boys started as a novella, but editor (Jennifer II) point out that it's a novel.
