English: Illustration accompanying the story "The Sage and the Atheist" ch. 11, from Voltaire's Romances translated from the French 1889. The caption accompanying the image says "Epictetus, the slave. From a painting by Giuseppe Rossi." ArtNet lists two possible artists by that name: Giuseppe Rossi (1820–1899) or Giuseppe Rossi (1823–1907). The Greek phrase Ἀνέχου καὶ ἀπέχου, "Anechou kai apechou" ("bear and forbear") can be seen on the image itself.
